Quality Tent for 2 People ~ $400

I've had enough of buying cheap tents that break, leak, etc, so it's time to invest in a proper one. It's for myself and my girlfriend - we want to spend about $400 in total. I'm assuming we can get a pretty good one for that price, but I'm unsure on what brands are best. Are there any deals on at the moment worth looking at?

  • Depends on what type you want for your style of camping.

Looking for something to go hiking with, small and compact to take less space, or size not really an issue as its going to be thrown in the back of the car.

Also what features must it has such as being able stand in it (was a requirement from my other half before we upgraded), number of rooms etc?

Family and friends have pop up tents such as the Coleman Popup, which appear to have good quality and they dont complain about them - $400 from BCF but I have seen the BCF own Wanderrer brand which seems just as good go for less than $300 recently. But is this what you are looking for?

BCF also has %20 off this weekend.

  • I recommend the next level up from Coleman. This is the 6 person version

You can of course get the 4 person if space in the car is an issue.

I have several tents and this my favourite

  • Definitely an 'instant' tent

  • I would personally go for something like this:

The reviews say a lot about this one.

One thing you'll need to decide is whether you're going to be carrying it by hand to the camping location (in which case, you'll need a durable/lightweight one = $$$$$) or if you want a durable one but don't mind the weight because you set up next to a car/campervan etc where do don't need to carry it.

$400 is quite a decent budget for a two-person tent - there's no reason why you can't go for something close to or the best one.

  • Ok you got 2 options: bigger/heavier or thinner/lighter.

Obviously if you want more space, it's going to be heavy. Looking at the coleman tents above, they're over 10kg. If you don't mind the weight, have a look at black wolf or coleman.

For $400 you can buy a decent modelled tent from brands like MSR, Big Agnes, Sierra Designs etc. They're thin but good quality and they're also lightweight (1-3kg). Have a look at Wild Earth, they sell oversea brands that are hard to find in Australia. They literally have sales every day, I won't be in a rush to buy.

I have a Sierra Designs Lightning, it's about 2kg, very easy to setup and good quality.

If weight isn't an issue, go for the big tents. Lightweight tents can be quite cramped in order to reduce their weight.

  • sorry guys, I should have said what kind of use it would be for. it won't be used for trekking, so portability/weight isn't high on the priority list. mainly used for festivals and would just be carried from the car. it would need to be solid in windy conditions. ease of setup/packdown would be great, too. I will look into the recommendations posted, cheers

  • Macpac and Kathmandu do regular discounts on their tents maybe 20 - 40% off. Subscribe to their list and wait.
