New ING Direct Credit Card

So I received an email earlier tonight from ING informing me that there will be a new ING Credit Card. I was really excited because ING have been really good on Ozbargain with their 5%, then 2% consistent cashback up until September 2016. After months/years of speculation, they're finally doing the Credit Card. Apparently I'm one of the "select few" to have received the email.

If it was actually a good deal, I would've posted it as a deal, but..

Key features:

  • $69 annual fee waived in the first year for applicants approved before 15 January 2017

Yep. That's it.. if you can even call that a significant feature. Pretty hard to sell that when you have cards like the ANZ Frequent Flyer Black which also have the first year waived plus a huge points bonus, plus a huge multitude of other features.

The other things are really not Ozbargain relevant.

  • Up to 45 days interest free (standard really, in fact other cards have longer)
  • 12.99% p.a. variable interest rate on purchases and cash advances (relatively low, but who on Ozbargain pays interest? Please tell me none of you do..)
  • 9.99% p.a. variable for purchases on installments - this is an interesting unique feature, but again 9.99%? Are any of you interested? I hope not.
  • Free ATM withdrawals in Australia (just like their Orange Everyday) - but why would you even do that when you get charged a cash advance, i.e. 12.99% p.a. pretty much immediately?

The following are all not included:

  • Rewards points (plenty of other cards)
  • Waiver on international purchases/forex rates (28 Degrees, Bankwest Platinum Cards, ANZ Travel Adventures)
  • Free Travel Insurance (many medium level cards and higher)
  • Lounge access (AMEX cards and some premium Mastercard/Visas)
  • Free Domestic Flight/Travel Credit (AMEX cards, ANZ Travel Adventures)
  • Access to AMEX Statement Credits deals (AMEX cards)
  • Free wine when paying with the card at Dining partners (Citibank)
  • Price Protection (Coles Mastercard)
  • Status with another loyalty program (Macquarie Platinum)
  • Free ATM withdrawals overseas (ANZ Travel Adventures)
  • Concierge
  • Low% Purchase Rate period/Balance Transfer
  • Car Rental Excess Insurance

It's called the "Orange One".

If you want to stretch it, I suppose the following are good:

  • ING Direct has an awesome app/internet banking. Really user friendly and intuitive as mentioned several times here
  • The installments benefit is actually unique and interesting. Good if you're desperate, but if you're desperate you probably can get a personal loan from Ratesetter as quickly/easily as getting an application for a Credit Card approved, and for probably a better rate too.
  • It's a Visa card. Better acceptance than AMEX.

Sorry this has kind of come out like a bit of a rant, but I'm just quite disappointed after all the build up and anticipation for what I was hoping would be a decent Visa/Mastercard. I think we're pretty spoilt with good AMEX cards in Australia now, and it looks like the wait for a good consistent Visa/Mastercard goes on..

TLDR: ING Direct have announced a new credit card, due to be announced soon which is pretty rubbish. I assume it will be of no interest to the majority of Ozbargainers as there is nothing about this card that is better than the cards offered by any of their competitors.

Thanks for passing on the info. We may have had our expectations too high on this offering. That said, it does seem quite consistent to some of the surveys they sent out to selected customers earlier.

Citibank have recently implemented something that sounds similar to the instalments with their credit cards called the Fixed Payments Option with currently a $100 cashback offer for existing Citibank credit cardholders if they use this. However, even with the cashback deal, this offer is irrelevant to most OzBargainers, as the interest associated with the Fixed Payment Option more than negates the cashback.

    hoho after such high expectations…
    not interested. period.

  • How boring. ING dropping behind the crowd this year :(

    That sounded like an advertorial.

  • Can't compare to your PLatinum Edge ? :P

  • What a disappointment.

  • Surprising. They're historically the ones with very generous offers for new customers. Like bonus for creating account etc.

    💩
    Release the 🦁

  • Wow, I have almost every one of ING's products and was looking forward to this when it eventually came. Figured they would be a game changer. Very disappointing. I'll stick to debit cards jumping around credit cards getting points.

  • Paaaassssssssssss

  • Wait, an ING Direct Credit Card? Like a Direct Debit Card but the money goes the other way? :) I wish.

Oh well, not sorry I stopped using my Orange card after 2% cashback ended.

  • it's crap. And it was crap dished out to select few.

I took part in their survey a while ago that asked what kind of things we wanted in a credit card. The two things that are most important to me are no annual fee, and no foreign transaction fee. I'm not interested in a waiver of the annual fee, I just want no annual fee. I can live without rewards, I just want to temporarily borrow a small amount of money and then repay it quickly, before interest kicks in.

Unless they make a few changes, I won't be applying.

Sounds pretty much like what they were suggesting in the survey they asked me to do a few months back. At the time I told them the offering was a joke and I still feel that way. They needed something like a 2-5% cashback, or rewards points to make it worthwhile, and I have no idea why they've decided to charge an annual fee. All in all I'm very disappointed.

Very disappointing card. I'd referred many, many friends to ING over the years (mostly for the $75 cash, but still…) and all of them stuck around for that glorious 2% cashback.

This CC and the newly-nerfed Everyday Debit account are not appealing at all. The only reason to use ING at all anymore is for their Superannuation product and possibly their Home Loan.

It's sad to say good-bye, but ING you're useless to me.

  • So does anyone know what happened to the ING credit card? There's no mention of it on their website.

If you are interested just go here:
      https://www.campaigns.ingdirect.com.au/orange-one/

It's an absolutely rubbish credit card however. All the rumors and talk to the media (Mozo) about an innovative credit offer for close to 2 years lead to this… Seems absolutely crazy.

Maybe… Just maybe… It's not on their main website because they are collating all the feedback from their campaign offering?

      • Yeah I know it's a crap offering, I was just curious because it wasn't on their main website. I was thinking they might have quietly removed it, but if it's still in the campaign stage there is still hope yet ;)

Or at least go back to the drawing board and actually put a product out there people will want.

I hope ING visits this thread and sees the unanimous disapproval of their new product.

  • I am sure there are cheaper rate credit cards out there, I am using ME Bank credit card zero fees, 9.99% on everything, 55 days interest free. Perfect for when you need to put something on the card for a month or two (such a sin i know :D). I am sure there are even cheaper options but this card is quite good for me when I need it (better rate than most bogus unsecured personal loans out there).

  • I had heards of them having credit cards through their FAQ section on the website. Search and found this.

Meh, sounds very standard. No actual reward. The only thing going for it is no annual fee. You can get other cards that are no annual fee ever.

They have fee free debit accounts. Why not a fee free credit card?

And they said they stopped the 2% cashback on paywave to go into other benefits. There are no benefits in this card. They should have 2% cashback on the credit card.
