Hi. I am looking for a decent wireless modem/router for a two storey townhouse, with up to four computers. Any good advise or bargain? Thanks

My advice would to get one that has USB support , this way you can share a usb printer (make it wireless) and also a usb external hard drive that way you can have a network share drive

i have the asus 300 wl v2 getting a bit old now but it even has the capability to download to the usb drive with no comp required (except to start the download)

Yes I concur. USB is a must for me now (and open source hackable firmware), I've been using Asus routers for several years now, wl500gx and gp. If I didn't already have 3 of them I'd be buying an Asus RT-N16 no question, that is one beast of a router (500MHz CPU and 128MB RAM), well worth the investment.

      • Thanks for the advise. Now I will need to find a cheap Asus RT-N16 somewhere in Sydney.

          • @Mikinoz: Umm. Just realised Asus RT-N16 is actually only a router. So I need a separate modem to support it as well. Will think about that.

            • @fxwwj: Oh yeah, sorry about that. I've always bought separate routers/modems after my very first integrated one (expensive 3com officeconnect) kept locking up because it got too hot.

The advantage of separate router/modem is that if you change your connection you only need a modem. I've changed connection from ADSL to ADSL2+ to Cable and now 3G over USB, all still using my Asus router.

And modems are always very cheap on the 'bay because they are next to worthless.

If i didnt just buy a cisco 857w to do the CCNA course i would be buying the RT-N16 looks perfect and asus routers are very reliable.

  • The Dynalink RTA 1025W is renowned for being very stable. I have had mine for 3 years and apart from the occasional reset it just keeps on steady as a rock and on 24/7. Five stars out of five stars on Product review http://www.productreview.com.au/showitem.php?item_id=5090 Price has come down too. Can get it for a $104 delivered. http://www.getprice.com.au/Dynalink-RTA1025W-Router.htm

  • My 2 cents
Do not get a DLINK branded router, they are known to overheat (mine does alot) and connection will continously drop until you let the modem cool.

  • Yes agreed on DLink, but Dynalink is a totally different brand.
