    I bought two kits - thanks @mdsh

  • Doesn't give ethnic mix unless you are not anglosaxon, it only gives you the region your ethnic mix belong to.

  • saw an episode of the check out saying you could get many of the services ancestry gives for free somehow (or via government agencies etc)

    • You're right that they have collected the services from other places, many of which you can access publicly. For example, Trove.nla.gov.au contains many old newspapers. The ancestry.com will automatically search for results based on your family tree that you have built on the site. But since trove is free, you can also manually search if you can think of good search queries. I used Trove to find that my great-grandfather managed a post office in Maitland.

But many public libraries have subscriptions to Ancestry.com. That means we can use all the services curated by ancestry.com without a subscription if we don't mind using it only in the library.

I paid this price last year from familytreedna. Currently it's $59USD, it may work out cheaper, just need to check on delivery and $ conversion rates.

Works out to be 72usd delivered, which will be about $100au

    • Did you learn anything interesting?

      • I've made a few connections (I've only had autosomal results so far) more people need to test!!! so nothing interesting yet. For example, I think i'm the only one in Australia to test with my surname. (male)

I have recently done another, more comprehensive test that will give results for paternal and maternal lines as well as pinpointing where my ancestors come from in the UK (newish company). I already know and its pretty common knowledge if you have my surname and have done research. This test will supply me with a heap more info so looking forward to that.

I find it very exciting, intriguing, interesting. Its a long term project.

Everyone gets tests for different reasons. I think many approach it naively and get disappointed and give up.
