CTP & Comprehensive. Do I Need Both? (NSW)

Hi guys,

My CTP apparently is about to expire tomorrow. I have 6 months comprehensive insurance remaining.

Do I need to buy CTP as a separate policy to the comprehensive? Or does comprehensive cover both?

My comprehensive was $800 (12 months) and CTP is looking like about the same again. Seems a lot and feel I may be getting double insurance unnecessarily?

Thanks!

You have to get CTP no matter what. Its compulsory.

    Comprehensive is up to you.

  • They are separate. CTP as the first word indicates, is not optional.

Comprehensive covers damage to other people's vehicles and your own. This is optional.

CTP is for injuries and is compulsory.

Here in Victoria it is a part of the annual registration fee.

In NSW if you drive without CTP your car is not validly registered and it invalidates other insurances and leaves you open to hefty fines.
The cops now have number plate scanning technology on the patrol cars so they will get an alert if they pass you on the street, so it is not something you can let slide for a couple of days without substantial risk.
You can buy CTP online, and the MAA greenslip site automatically compares all the available policies for your details to show you the best rate (note, it doesn't include some loyalty discounts, so it you have several NRMA polices, for example, they will give you a better price over the phone than via the comparison site).

  • Isn't CTP like TAC ? It covers you if you injure someone in a crash.

Comprehensive will cover your car and someone else's car/property in a crash.

  • COMPULSORY Third Party

  • CTP has to be valid to maintain registration. No CTP, no rego.

Comprehensive is your choice though. Recommended unless it is too expensive, in which case Third Party Property (TPP) insurance is near essential, will prevent you from having to pay for all the damage if you hit another car/house/fence etc. TPP won't cover you for damage to your car though, and in the event of someone hitting your car you will need to chase them for payment for repairs.
