  • I read these AmEx rebates in many posts. Can someone tell me how do I get this card and what are the costs for having it? Is it something like a debit card?

    • +1

my suggestion, is get the American Express Velocity Escape Card
      https://www.americanexpress.com/au/content/compare-velocity-…

or get one through your Bank, but definitely get one with some sort of rewards attached to it, i.e. Qantas, Virgin (Velocity)

Amex offers many cards to suit difference preferences, the entire offering is here. You can select features to narrow down the cards that suit you.

They are credit cards (not like debit cards); you get a statement for all the charges you put on it, and so long as you pay the statement in full by the due date, you will not incur any interest. Otherwise, you will incur interest charges. (Amex also offers charge cards, but I am not referring to those).

If a free card is what you are after, there are 3 to choose from :

      • Qantas Discovery - best if you are collecting Qantas FF Points for redeeming flights. Points, if used for flights, are often valued at 1c/pt or more, equivalent to a reward rate of 1% or more.

      • Amex Essential - provides highest cash-equivalent rewards among the 3, and most flexible cashback. My post on this card is here.

      • Velocity Escape - best if collecting Velocity points.

I have the first two, they have given me much cashbacks and rewards without a cent of extra cost. So gotta say, I love them :-).

Whichever Amex card you end up choosing, if you apply via a referral link, you will get a bigger bonus. For e.g.,

      • Qantas Discovery: You receive 12,500 Qantas Points when you spend $300 in the first 3 months of Card Membership and an additional 2,500 Qantas Points when you first spend on selected Qantas products and services in Australia. (Without referral: you receive 5,000 and 2,500 respectively).

      • Amex Essential: You get $75 if you apply online and spend $750 in the first 3 months (Without referral : you get $50 bonus).

Referral links are listed in the Amex Referral Wiki.

      Hope this helps.

        Thanks for the awesome explanation!
So basically i do my shopping with the card and then how do i transfer the money to the account/card? I read that there is a 1% transaction fee.

        • +1

No such fee, I usually use BPAY to pay from my bank account, a day or two before it is due.

        • Be careful if a merchant wants to levy a surcharge for using Amex. (The big chains generally do not do this). In that case, the reward points may not be worth it. After a while, you know how much the rewards are worth, and you can use your judgement to see if it is still worthwhile to use the Amex card for payment or not.

      • NOTE: the spend condition for Qantas Discovery has now changed.

        • Qantas Discovery: You receive 12,500 Qantas Points when you spend $300 $750 in the first 3 months
      • So if I wanted to buy a TV and maybe xb1 or ps4 in the short term meantime which one should i get?

Also maybe small groceries run here and there.

        • Taken to PM comms, since specific.

      • Do these cards have free travel insurance?

        • You know the first link in my comment - to all of Amex offerings?
If you follow this to page, on the left hand side, it provides you with different criteria, you can select the criteria you want. There is travel insurance. This is a quick way to narrow down the cards that offer this. So you can look at them in detail.

As for the free cards, they do not offer free insurance.

  • Using this with Amex you can get 2 Cartons of Corona for $76, might be worth posting.

  • chivas regal 12yo is $41 with a woolies rewards card. add another $14+ through beer, alcopops, or even a couple of 50ml scotch bottles.

i found a couple of porter's shops on the shop small map today. they had glenmorange on special for around $64 a week ago, just my luck.

  • How often can you use both the code and the Amex offer?

    • +1

The amex offer can be used once per card. The code, I assume is time-sensitive, but not sure if it can be applied again on the same account on a separate purchase. (I suppose one can check by a simulated purchase).

        Cool, thanks

  • Glenfiddich 21 year normal price $231 even better with amex offer, ordered from my local store but got told not many stores carry this item but defiantly a great deal if you can find it, Bought at BWS dural

  • Thanks OP. Bought Kahlua 1L and Malibu 700mls - both for $45 after Amex cashback. Works out cheaper than duty-free at airport.
Just as well I did not get at airport recently.

    • Correction, I meant the Baileys 1L (not Kahlua).

  • Thanks OP. At $35 it cost less than buying from a duty free shop while travelling :)
