VPN Suggestions for a Newcomer

Hi all,

So I recently got NBN for my home and I'm looking for a VPN to go with it. I've never used a VPN before because my speeds have been so sub par in the past, if I did use a VPN, I'd be getting 1mbps… With that said, what are some VPNs that would be good for someone that has no experience in them.

I've currently looked into the following

PIA
ExpressVPN
NordVPN

Are there any others you'd suggest? I want something that I can set up at the modem/router level so that I don't have to individually set it up on all the computers running in the house, is there something like that?

Any suggestion is appreciated and as long as the price is <$10/mth I'm happy with that.

Cheers,

ProjectZero

I am using both Getflix & PureVPN. Getflix DNS doesn't really work for Netflix anymore and its VPN service is mediocre. PureVPN is not bad and I bought a deal from Stacksocial a while ago. However I am not sure I want to recommend them as they are currently banned on OzBargain for sockpuppeting :P

    OzBargainers seem to recommend PIA.

Here are the deals tagged with VPN.

Thanks Scotty! Will have a look at those deals.

I've been using Windscribe of late and they've been pretty good. Was only about $50 to get a lifetime subscription from Stacksocial, and it runs better than PIA did. PIA has a really buggy software suite for Mac unfortunately I found, however I have no experience with doing installations via the router.

My main concern in all of this is the torrenting side as my family does do this a lot and also, with the multiple computers each with a different OS on each pretty much I want something I can centralise in my router.

Would you happen to know if Windscribe allow for installation into the router? Do they allow for torrenting?

      • +1

Windscribe do allow torrenting on most of their servers. From their site, it looks like you can install on DD-WRT and Tomato based routers.

          Thanks for clearing that up!

    Why do you want VPN?

If it's just torrenting, you might be better off using a seedbox.

Having it set up at the router level will depend on the capabilities of the router and the VPN service, as well as your own capability to configure it. Generally speaking, I wouldn't think this is for the average punter.

I'm planning on getting netflix and some other streaming services now that the internet speed will allow it, so a VPN is probably the better option.

I have the Netgear D7000, based on my quick browsing of the set up pages, it seems to allow for a VPN to be configured onto the modem/router

If I recall (I have one of those in AP mode - edit: actually I have an R7000), it only supports remote access VPN using OpenVPN's protocol.. Meaning you can access stuff on your home network from remote locations, but it doesn't do a site-to-site VPN.

The other thing to remember is that if you set up a full tunnel site-to-site vpn (i.e. all your traffic flows over the vpn), then if there is performance issues with the vpn, everything suffers. You can also use a split tunnel vpn where only the traffic you want to protect goes over the vpn - but I don't know how you'd go about that for several torrenting clients.

Most of that flew over my head… Any guides for beginners? I'm good with building a PC but completely useless for networking.

        • +1

I did some digging around, and I'm very certain that the Nighthawk D7000/R7000 routers don't support site-to-site VPN.

The long and short of that is you will need to install your VPN client on the individual PC's.

@airzone: Yeah, that could become annoying as most of the other users would not be tech savvy… if I am having trouble with it, the others wont be able to use it lol.

      What a is this seedbox?

      • +2

Lease a virtual server somewhere else in the world to do your dirty work for you. You just ftp the results back to your pc when done.

        • +1

I see .. say if I get "audited" for torrenting for example, then wouldnt it be possible to trace where the destination (e.g. my home PC ISP IP address) is .. not really safe then?

        • +2

Same could be said for a VPN. The IP address of the seed box shows up on the torrent.. And if that is located in a place like the netherlands…

NordVPN working well for me. Good Black Friday deal on at the moment too.

Thinking of doing that, trying to see how to set it up for D7000 Netgear modem/router as well lol

I got mine configure to Raspberry Pi with External HD, PIA (easy to configure).
http://transmissionbt.com/ gives you a nice web interface :)

I haven't use others but I would say PIA, and I don't use PIA software, so not sure about how good they are.

    • That's a good point.. I use a seedbox and the control software is pretty flaky… For the price, I could probably just have PIA (or whatever) and run it from a rpi.

    • +1

Thanks, I'll read up on that. Based off my quick glance, this is only for BT right? Or would I be allowed to route all outgoing traffic through the Raspberry Pi?

      • +1

That is not part of my requirements, I wouldn't do that.
If I want to surf using VPN, I simply login to RP or worst case, I could install the PIA client on my pc.
I don't want all my traffic to go through VPN, no reason for me :)

    I use TunnelBear.
Primarily for YouTube Red while traveling overseas.

More importantly I really like that the Android app makes a bear roaring sound when it connects to the VPN.

It's the little things in life :-)

I wanted to set it up at the modem/router level a few weeks back but decided against it. My network is 94/38 mbps but with vpn running on the router it was 15 for download at best… If I have the client on the pc it's still about 85.

So in the end I went with NordVPN. Having a little trouble with them atm… Does not work for me on windows PC, must have set it up wrong or something, but works on OSX. Works on Android as well but the speeds are beyond slow…

Try Opera browser with free VPN.

    • +1

I've heard bad things about free VPN like Hola… does Opera provide their our service or do you mean the free VPN add-ons like Hola?

BetterNet is also a free VPN, been using it for about a year:

    https://www.betternet.co/

  • One great service is torguard. Because of the black Friday they have posted a good deal at the moment. Alternatively, check out securevpn they are an australian vpn service and are fast.

Personally I use NVPN and VPS. Although, this requires you to setup the vpn manually.

    Also checkout these links:

  • I personally have been using TorGuard lately. Their Windows & Linux widget is pretty hard to beat with 1600+ locations worldwide you can utilize and the annual subscription being around the $55AUD mark at full price I believe. I only have good things to say about their service. The one thing you have to watch it to make sure if you do torrents not to do them on a server that doesn't allow torrenting. As some exit nodes don't allow torrents.

  • So I've been trying out a few VPNs, the first one I tried was Nord VPN but for whatever reason I could not set it up properly on my desktop (DNS leaks) and a secondary desktop that as soon as it connected to the VPN it will not be able to access the internet at all.

I've also tried windscribe but I can't seem to even connect to the VPN on my desktop so I've completely given up… Anyone have any advice as to why this is happening? I contacted Nord VPN support before but they took like a week just to respond so I couldn't be bothered with them and Windscribe seeing as it is a trial I just gave up.

Is there any VPN that is easy to install and work? I'm thinking of getting Pure VPN since they seem to be the second best in terms of the criterias I set on the comparison table of thatoneprivacysite.net

    Thanks!

  • Purchase a cheap Linux/Debian server, and setup a PPTP VPN client on it.

That's what I do, and it's very cheap too.

    • Is there any skills involved with Linux or whatever? I am a complete novice at Linux.

      • Very, very simple.

if you want OP, you can use my VPN and it has relatively good speeds as the server location is in Singapore. I'll make you a Username and Password if you wish!

        • Thanks for the offer but I will probably need more than one connections at a time so I will probably have to get a used one, plus support chats will probably be necessary for me to set it up properly anyway.

    • Isn't it a bit overkill just for VPN? Moreover, you only get one location & one IP address, whereas most VPN providers have multiple locations.

  • I use PIA. Works well. Around 15 mbps

I have Kodi and used a VPN app but later decided to have a dedicated VPN router. I bought that cheap mini GL-inet router and set up DDwrt on it with OpenVPN. Since it is a miniature router it is always on and everything that needs VPN goes through it. However, it can handle only one full HD TV as the VPN is 7-8 mbps through it (limited by the CPU of the router). I think they introduced a more powerful router with better speeds since I bought mine.
