Help with Gaming PC Build - Budget $2000

I know this is done to death but you guys are just so great with the advice you give, so would love if you can help me out.

Budget is $2k firm.

I'm going to Purchase the GTX 1080 for $780 and the Crucial MX300 525GB SSD for $160 in the current sale.
With Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales coming up, should I wait for that to see if there are some great deals on the other parts I need? Or are there some good discounts now in the 20% off ebay sale?

I'm trying to stretch the budget to an i7 CPU, but may have to settle for an i5. Don't really need an i7, mainly used for gaming, but if I can squeeze it in the budget I would like it.

Will get 2 x 8GB Corsair Vengence DDR4 RAM, or similar.

Then I will probably go an EVGA G2 750W Gold PSU. I want a good long lasting PSU. Any other recommendations here?

The parts I really need help with is ATX Motherboard and Case. I would like to future proof it a bit, and have a case with USB3.1 gen2 Type C and type A port on the front, and a motherboard that supports it of course. Is this reasonable to want, or is it going to add an unreasonable amount to the cost, and not be worth it? If it's reasonable, can you suggest any good mobos and cases that fit the bill. I like a case that is sleek and understated, with a window, not a big glary flashy bright orange gaming case that looks like a spaceship. But at the end of the day not too worried about looks, more worried about function and long term reliability.

Other questions:
Do I need a CPU Cooler with an i5 or an i7-6700K??? Or is that only needed if overclocking? I don't intend on overclocking.

Do I need to worry about cooling anywhere else? Or will the case fans do the job?, even with the beast of the 1080 graphics card? Do they pump out a lot of heat?

I'll be building it myself. Also local warranty is preferred, and I'm willing to spend a LITTLE bit extra to get it. I'm in Perth and get a lot of stuff from PLE for peace of mind, but their premium is too high to get the whole build done there so hoping there are some good bargains to be had with cyber monday etc.

Anything else I've missed?

Cheers in advance for the help guys :)

  • This one doesn't look too bad: https://www.ple.com.au/Products/623713/ASUS-H170-PRO-LGA1151… for $149. Only USB3.0 not 3.1…
Is 3.1 still pretty new to the market? I'm wondering if I should just settle for USB3.0

Or this is on special as well for $185 from PLE.
    https://www.ple.com.au/Products/620094/Gigabyte-Z170-D3H-LGA…
Worth the price difference? I'm thinking it would be good to get the board from PLE for warranty peace of mind if the price is reasonable.

    Thoughts?

  • When you're asking about USB 3.1, are you asking for the sake of the connector (USB Type C) or faster data transfers (USB 3.1 Gen 2)?

USB 3.1 naming conventions are a bit annoying at the moment. USB 3.1 Gen 1 has the same transfer speeds of USB 3.0 (5Gbps). USB 3.1 Gen 2 has double that (10Gbps). USB Type-C is the name of the reversible connector, and it can be either Gen 1 or Gen 2.

    • Sorry yeah the naming is a bit wierd, i was asking for the transfer speeds, so wondering if there are mobos and cases out there at a reasonable price that support USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type A and Type C ports at the full 10gbps speed, or if the tech is too new to be cost efficient. It would be good at the very least to have a USB 3.0 Type C port on the front of the case as I can see future devices all using this connector.

  • any reason for that case?
    https://www.mwave.com.au/product/nzxt-source-s340-midtower-c…
plenty of nice cases for around the 100 mark.
also you don't really need a optical drive now days ive not used mine in years.

And the K series CPU does not come with stock fans so yes you 100% need a cooler.
but unless you definitely want to overclock go for I5 6600 and use stock cooler which works fine though you can replace later time if you want.

    • Nah im not set on a case, that one just looked good and had good reviews… I'm tossing up whether to forgo the optical drive and then get a mid tower case. They still fit ATX boards right? I like the look of them more and being a bit smaller they are easier to move around. But I'll be kicking myself the next time i need to use an optical disk…. hmmm

      • Yeah they fit ATX MB mine mid towerm and atx i have a Corsair spec 03 even cheaper then at around $75.

        http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/External-USB-3-0-DVD-RW-DVD-ROM-C…

        external optical drive $9.39
        usb 2.0 though.

I wouldn't buy the PSU from PCCG look at that G2 650w That is the same price as the 750w G2 from Mwave.

Nice PSU i have the EVGA G2 750w

btw i just worked out that if you buy all those parts listed above apart from the GPU and SSD from Mwave it would cost about $1119 delivered.
So 2059 plus whatever shopping express delivery cost is.

The same items cost $1149 delivered from PCCG

PCCG postage has always been excessive.

        good luck

Check out static ice aswell it has more stores then pc part picker.
        http://www.staticice.com.au/index.html

        • PLE sells the 750W too, so I'll be able to pick it up from there :)

They do the mobo for $209 as well so ill save $6 on shipping there… ill hold out for a deal with free shipping on the RAM… And I'll have to look around for a case locally coz shipping a case is going to be uber expensive…

  • Do I need a CPU Cooler with an i5 or an i7-6700K?

    Yeah, you do.

Do I need to worry about cooling anywhere else?

Not really. You can worry about the specifics of the airflow if you really want, but it's not that important. Case fans should be fine.

The parts I really need help with is ATX Motherboard and Case. I would like to future proof it a bit, and have a case with USB3.1 Type C and type A port on the front, and a motherboard that supports it of course

The Inwin 805 has a USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type C port on the front, and the AsRock Z170 Extreme4 has Gen 2 Type C on the rear I/O.

The Extreme4 was the cheapest I found (from a quick look) with the full 10Gbps.

    • Ah awesome thanks for the suggestions, that looks like a nice board.. Bit of a price premium but not toooo bad… I'm going to whack these in the original post price picker list to see how it affects the price and see if anyone has any better suggestions. Cheers again :)

      • No problem. I noticed the Windows license is missing as well, do you already have one or just leaving it off?

For what it's worth, you can also get add-on PCIe cards like this to add a Type C connector to a motherboard lacking one, but you may as well just put the cost towards a motherboard with native support anyway.

(In case you thought I was pushing PCCG, you don't have to use them, it's just my preferred retailer and site for part picking).

Also, you could cut down on the PSU a bit, if you're looking to trim the fat.

        • Yeah I got Windows sorted already, and yeah I am fond of PCCG myself but I will shop around and see who has the best prices :)

Ok i've scaled the processor back to a i5-6600 with stock cooler to save money and priced it and the RAM to ebay's current sale prices. Thats got the price down below $1900 which is good.. Really just the case left to decide now. I might walk into PLE tomorrow and see what they got.

Any other suggestions are still welcome! I'm close to pulling the trigger, but still not sure if I should be holding off in case there are better sales coming up with black friday/cyber monday…?

If anything, I'd recommend scaling back the case, InWin cases are for looks so if you are on a budget to build a a gaming PC, and focus more on CPU and MB.

      Just my suggestion

      http://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/fgMmFd

The Price for the GPU and SSD is the RP so take that into account, you can save some money and have better parts IMO. Silverstone, seasonic and Corsair are said to make really good PSU, so stick with those brands.

  • For all your cooling needs

    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=HxSLbpAwibg

    No really try it

  • you seem pretty much spot on, nice mobo choice, only changes you could save on is the case, not much else, though it is a nice case. PSU you may find only slightly

other considerations are purpose of your PC, will you need an i7 for any programs for work or study?

also your card can support a high end monitor for gaming, it seems over the next year we will benefit from cheaper 4k monitors ;)

Just a note: you won't be coming close to using 750W (or even 650W), so you might be better off getting the G2 650 which has the added bonus of having a significantly quieter fan under load.
