Must be for buy now purchases. They only make $30% on auction sales. This is a saving of over 40%. They would be losing money.
Buy now wine prices are often heavily inflated, so can accommodate these discounts.
They don't pay back from their own pockets. Credit comes from AMEX
@Jimmy007: How do you know? I highly doubt Amex take on the entire cost. For Shop Small, yes, but for brand specific deals, they would have to be coming to an arrangement with that brand. Otherwise, why would Amex promote that particular brand? It's most likely both that are footing part of the bill. Which explains why Harvey Norman are trying to stop people using the Amex deal in creative ways.
@puffinfresh: Transaction fee charged by amex. If both parties are footing bill then there shouldn't be any problem for the seller as they will still make profit. Also AMEX can't be forcing them to participate right? They should be willing to do that

I've had a couple of newsagents refuse to load my public transport card only this month for shop small. They say the fee is too high and they make nothing off the PT top-ups. Also had one restaurant flat out refuse the AMEX for the same high fee reason. They all appear clearly on the shop small app - what gives? Do you think AMEX knows they are not playing ball at the retail end of things?
@Appleboat: Complain to amex and they should still give you the credit. And tell them to give a warning to the shop!

Seems they increased prices on some items after this went live. A bottle I was looking at earlier this morning went from $27 to $35. Shame.

definitely sure it was not an auction. i used the buy it now menu to find it both times.
turns out i left the browser window (the one showing $27/bottle) open on the other computer and i managed to order at the lower price.
