  • Is this the new richer colors version?

  • I've got the LIFX whites on the recent deal, and they've really made a difference to the way we use lights, etc. I'm struggling to go for colored bulbs though, i mean, maybe it helps sexy times… but is it something that people are getting 'just for fun' or is there a function that it fulfils? Could someone please provide some examples? Thanks.

sexy times not a good enough reason? =P

    • We have the coloured ones in our bedroom, which is also where our child currently sleeps. I also have the cool little battery-free clicker thing that has 4 presets on it.

One button has all three bulbs at full white light so we can see what we're doing normally.
One button has all three bulbs at lowest white light so we can still get things done while she's awake in there, but is winding down for sleep.
One button has all three bulbs at lowest red light, so my wife and I can still see enough to get around and into/out of bed (she gets home around 11pm, I get up for work around 3am) without waking the kid.
One button turns all the lights off.

We've also been known to use third party apps to throw a light show in the room which entertains the hell out of our daughter, but that's not a regular usage thing.

  • Is this better than Belkin Wemo or LIFX bulbs?

My house is decked out with hue bulbs and I'll agree that colour ones are a bit of a gimmick. It can be useful in certain situations- when my team score a goal, they flash red. Every second Thursday night at 7pm, the kitchen lights turn green to remind me to take out the recycling bin.
When the last person in the house leaves, all lights automatically turn off, yet when we come home they turn back on.
When I first got them, I set it so that all lights flash when an international space station flies overhead. The next morning at 2am, all 4 lights in the bedroom started flashing, freaking me and the missus out. I thought I was about to get abducted. I was not in the good books that day.
On another note, I love using Siri commands with my watch and phone. Big life changer.

      • Hi Tom, thank you…

My question is more around the price point…

LIFX bulb is around $30 so $90 for 3 bulbs and don't need a hub
Belkin is $70 for 2 bulbs and wemo link and another $19 for extra bulb

        Philip Hue costs $173

Is Philip Hue better than Belkin Wemo or LIFX bulb? If so, in what way?

We're looking at Hue because it supports Apples HomeKit and in turn Siri voice commands. I don't believe the other two options you listed do, although Lifx have announced they'll be bringing a new model to the market that supports it. That's a big pro for us given me and my partner both own iPhones and iPads.

The Hue bulbs are pretty competitive from memory price wise once you have the hub, so if you plan to get a lot of bulbs it may even out a bit. There's also a cheaper two bulb starter kit too with non ambient lights if you don't care about colour.

Might be worth looking at what accessories each platform supports too. I know Hue has wall mountable dimmers and one way switches for instance which might be handy if you want to be able to turn off lights at a wall but not disable them such that you can't turn them back on with your phone.

But yeah, for us HomeKit is the biggie and I'm not sure Lifx will support it in time for us to start our buying. That and I think costs will level out as I'd like to expand beyond a single room, and generally won't get ambient bulbs which cost more.

The hue white bulbs are $30 each at Apple stores. I think that's pretty fair considering the added benefits.

  • doesnt show up as eu 119 anymore is the deal over?
