In my personal humble opinion, best canned tuna on the market (When priced at $1.99!) +1 TA!

    • So homebrand is always best?

      • +5

I'm a fan of the Aldi Yellowfin when there's no other options - http://aldimum.com.au/ocean-rise-yellowfin-chunk-tuna/ for approx $1.16 a can. But ill be all over this deal like a rash :)

        • Hmmm I generally don't shop Aldi, but might go to try this one. That much for a can of Yellowfin is insanely cheap.

        • Agreed - the Aldi Yellowfin is great. Used to buy Coles brand, but have since switched.

I will check out this special on the 185g tins, which is what I normally buy

        • +1

          @dbun1:

This deal is nearly 3 times the price of regular Aldi tuna. You can use the money you save to visit Movida a few times a year 😊

        • +1

          @tightwad:

Maybe compared to the smaller tins.

The 185g tins are not far off this price

        • @dbun1:

I get the big ones, 425g.

Don't think I'm interested, though, now, after reading wolfsbooter's comment below.

  • +2

Yup, best tuna by far. Thanks, TA!

  • +10

Gonna order 100 cans at this price.

You can never leave enough in the office and pantry.

  • +3

Couldn't agree more. The best canned Tuna you can get. I'm also a fan of the Coles Yellowfin cans, but this stuff is in a league of it's own. Will stock up the pantry, thanks TA!

Edit - Hope this includes varieties, Puttanesca is the best.

    • Tart's tuna 😊

  • +1

The only tinned tuna we buy on our house

  • gonna loot my local store, best fish, and well done this time, for saying the best tuna on the *market**, and not OzBargain

    • Stealing isn't a bargain

  • +8

WARNING: Once you try this tuna you'll never be able to go back to a regular brand.

    So chunky and delicious.

  • Thanks for that. Coles used to regularly have this size on special ( 2.50?) But seems to have fallen out of practice. Begrudgingly paid $4 this week. Will stock up

  • What do you do with all the oil in Sirena tuna?

I drained it off into a Jalna 2kg yoghurt container and soon had a large amount of an unbelievably foul smelling brew. I got my brother who lives on a farm to dump it in a far corner of a paddock where hopefully it didn't bother the cows too much.

    • -2

I usually dump all my oils, including engine oil down the drain.

    • I consume it.

    • Did your brother wear a brown onion on his belt?

      • +3

Which was the style at the time…

  • I will be filling many stockings with this!

  • +2

Yeah thanks Dad a tin of tuna - best Christmas ever!

    • "Ah, but not just any old tuna, son!"

  • +2

Thanks OP! We were overdue for a 1/2 price 185g tin special.
This will serve me well for my tuna breakfasts that I often eat in the bath.

  • +3

Aldi Tuna is OK for the price but I've been eating good old Sirena tuna for close to 50 years now ! still Love it !
Easiest 10 min spaghetti dish ever, two cloves in olive oil, throw in a tin of tuna, add Sauce, then add cooked just under al dente Barilla spaghetti ! ( if you dont like tomato, just add cream n Philly ( or milk and cornflour for the lower cal option ) and presto !
Yep the best Canned Tuna currently on the market.. though the Tuna grade is not as good as the old days but hey, still better than all the others.
They're all doing it now, smaller / Inferior quality to manage costs.
You wouldn't expect them to cut back on the brainwashing Ad's to reduce costs….

    • I've tried so many pasta brands out there, Barilla is definitely #1.

    • Well, tuna has been overfished so maybe it's just the quality of what's left in the ocean :/ Having said that, I also love Sirena tuna and it really does go well with pasta. My recommendation is pasta, spinach and avocado with the Olive Oil tuna (pour all the oil in!)

      • Dolphin isn't as good as you'd think

  • +1

No reason to buy anything other than Safcol tuna, the most sustainably sourced* tuna one can buy in Australia (after the awkwardly named, difficult-to-find and expensive 'Fish 4 Ever' brand).

  • -1

Something smells fishy about this deal.

  • +16

I don't understand the Sirena following? The stuff is now made in Indonesia (from Indonsian and imported tuna!!) so who knows what kind of quality control it goes through. And it's one of most unsustainablly caught fish of all tuna brands sold in Australia. And with all this, it's also the most expensive. Someone is making a very nice packet from the rip off!

    • +1

      Interesting and useful comment.

    • It's funny because I think it used to be the most sustainably fished. Maybe they're still riding on that reputation (they were with me, until I found out)

    • +2

Is it that really that bad in terms of sustainability? I always thought it was one of the better ones.

Apparently it is all pole and line caught (Indonesia and Thailand) and is 100% traceable:

      http://www.sirena.com.au/sustainability/
      http://www.sirena.com.au/sustainability/sirenas-stringent-tr…

Looks to be one of the better ones imo.

    • Most company utilize Free market to cheapen the material, sell it with same price, more profit.

  • Haven't tried this, but it seems like everyone likes it, so I'll give it a try?

Edit: What are the expiry dates on these things usually? Can I stock up a hundred and be fine to finish them within a year?

    • Just buy afew to test first…
I bought a heap of tins last time this was on special (100+) because of the hype and how much I eat tuna (min 5 cans of John West per week) and I have to say the texture and quality of tuna was great, but the flavour was a big let down compared to John West IMO, just something different about it.
John Wests new Firey Inferno chili flavour can' be beat IMO!

  • Prefer the bigger cans. But it hasn't been on discount for long time

    • The 485g ones are on discount at woolies atm. Not 1/2 price though.

      • Yes so the half price still beats the larger cans. Per tuna gram wise?

        • Yep. I computed earlier. It was around $10/kg for the half price, $11/kg for the current deal on 485g ones.

  • +1

@ozb you need to be scientific:
    425g $5.00 $11.76 / 1KG
    185g $1.99 $10.76 / 1KG

and here's a tasty recipe for those that like Tuna. Depending on how hungry you are, it can make 4 meals for me and I eat a lot so can feed your regular family with leftovers. $4 for 2 tins of this tuna, $1 for 500gm pasta, and the other stuff that most people have in their fridge/pantry.

    Enjoy.

  • -1

You DO realise this is just made in Thailand cat food? Of all the Tuna sold in Woolworths all of it is made in Thailand. Its all rubbish.

I have only seen 1 canned Tuna thats not made in Thailand and thats Kirkland Albacore Tuna made in USA. Sold at Costco.

    • -1

Do a little more research then come back and comment again.

      • +3

I have have you? What have I said that was not fact? Just because it's cheap doesn't make it any better.

        "Sirena Flavoured Tuna

        Per 100g

        525kJ (125cal), 20.8g protein, 3.0g fat, 3.6g carbs, 3.6g sugars, 405mg sodium

A favourite for flavour with 63% tuna and all natural ingredients including added vegetable oil may taste good but is not nutritionally any better although it claims to be produced via an increased percentage of sustainable fishing practices.

        Fish From: Made in Thailand"

This has the highest Bisphenol content by far. See the Choice roundup for comparisons.

  • Nice tuna but will stick with my John West onion and tomato at $1 a can when they are on special.

  • +1

The worst tuna on the market, please do not buy it.

    • +1

The worst in which sense? I personally prefer Sirena over other brands. It's subjective.

      • +2

I do as well, its a great tuna. I just don't like it when I don't find ANY OF IT. usually empty when I need it :S That was my weak attempt throw off people from buying it :P

        • Haha fair enough. In that case - yes it's gross.

  • +2

    Chili flavor FTW!

  • +3

HA ! Dolphin friendly sustainable fishing… it's such a joke.
I've seen it overseas first hand.. with all the smaller 20-40 foot boats using long lines, then loading up John West "Mothership" with tuna, sure the mother ship did all the right things and was "Dolphin friendly sustainable" but the others where just poor fishermen and would fish using whatever methods possible.

  • So… I just went into my local Woolworths to buy some 185g tins in oil - none on the shelf whatsoever. Woolworths website says "unavailable".

Anyone else noticed the same thing? Seems to be stock for springwater and chilli.

    • +1

Wife just picked up 6x oil and 6x chilli at Woolworths Coburg VIC.

    • In my local Wooly store (in SA), the oil cans were all over the shelf, followed by the chilli ones. I used to like the oil ones, but upon reading the nutri facts on the back, I realized that the oil cans have way more sodium in them (like a couple of times more) compared to the springwater ones. The store had only 11 cans of the springwater cans left, so I bought 10 of them and left 1 behind for the next person. :)

  • Thanks TA, placing an order now, both oil and (first time) chilli too : )

FWIW, looking up tuna brands today I saw Greenpeace's Canned Tuna Guide that rates brands on sustainability.

Sirena rates okay, but surprisingly Coles and Aldi brands do even better. Don't know about the taste, may be worth trying them all. Greenseas gets a caning.

The other thing I saw was the ShopEthical ratings: Safcol gets an A and John West gets a C. No mention of Sirena or Greenseas though.

  • Really annoyed.

Bought cans in conjunction with the $40 Cashreward deal and a bunch of spring onions but only the spring onions were delivered.

Apparently the cans were out of stock.

Bullshit as I just came back from the store to buy eggs.

Is this gonna affect my Cashreward.

    EDIT:

On my Woolworths 'Track Your Order' page, the order is now only for a bunch of spring onions … the total is wayyyy below the required for the $40.

I'm gonna be very angry if I don't get my cashback.

  • Cheers - just bought an embarrassing amount at the local Woolies. Completely out of the water, and chilli ones, but surprisingly a ton of the oil ones left - my favourite.

  • Haven't been able to buy any cans yet, been to 8 different stores and have accumulated 6 rain checks so far.
