New Laptop around $1000

Hi ozbargainers,

I am looking for an all round laptop which will be mainly used for,

web browsing - netflix youtube etc.
some gaming, i don't mind lowering the graphic detail.

From searching the forums I have come across this refurb - http://www.cfonline.com.au/index.php?route=product/product&p…

Ideally I would be able to find one at a cheaper price, my budget is around $600 - $1,000. However, I would much rather pay a bit more than be stuck with a laggy unit.
I am somewhat in a rush to get a new laptop. Being time poor and having zero knowledge on this subject, I am at your mercy and will be pretty much buying whatever is suggested.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

That's actually pretty acceptable for the price so long as you understand refurbished items may show signs of previous use.

That laptop is refurbed by ASUS with a 1 year warranty behind it so I think the risks are fairly low.

    • thanks scrimshaw, not sure if it is overkill for my needs after looking at ebays 20% off sale i came across this

      http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Asus-F555LD-15-6-Intel-Core-i7-1T…

with the 20% disc it comes in at $719.20.

That's sold as a 'Gaming' laptop even though it's only suitable for basic usage. I could label my Core 2 Duo running a 9600GT as a 'gaming' PC too, even though it's only as powerful as a Nintendo Wii.

NVIDIA® GeForce® 820M is only about 25% as powerful as a 960M. Are you sure you want a GPU that weak? That's only acceptable for games like Minecraft.

The question is what games you play: if you're an FPS player the Nvidia Geforce 960M is the baseline GPU I would consider. Even then, the GTX 960M is considered mid-to-high end — it's a good choice for $1000 dollars, and it plays most modern titles reasonably well. I think you should stick to it.

If you drop down to something like 950M or 940MX, you'd be looking at very casual gaming territory, or simpler/older titles like DOTA2 or CS:GO.

Oh, and the Lenovo "E" series running the Radeon R7's are pretty weak too, they are even weaker than a Geforce 940MX. you should buy them for business not for gaming :(
