Hey OzBargain What Are Some of Your Great Food Preparation Ideas / Snacks / Meals / Recipes / etc (Using Main Supermarkets Only)

I live near an Aldi a Coles and a Woolworths (very lucky) and I need some good home food preparation ideas that won't totally destroy the weekly fortnightly monthly etcly food budget

No real preferences other than preferably cheaper than eating outside if possible eg a foot long subway or local burger fish and chips joint or local Asian Italian Indian Korean kebab pizza cafe juice joint etc restaurant just name your great meal ideas and it possible average prices

Alternatively just means what you have been eating lately if you think that it is ozbargain worthy

My last experiment was elbow macaroni pasta / creamed corn / tomato paste and some cumin powder to make a nice hot soup that take like 30 mins max on the stove in a stove pot cost about roughly less then five dollars for a nice large big serving for 3-4 people

Great for crappy nights when you just want something warm

So ozbargain what's your food idea specialty?

I've just started buying chicken breast and baking them with all sorts of herbs and spices. Then I steam carrot and brocolli and bake Sweet potato. It makes up 2 dinners and 2 lunches for around $15. I also make up a slow cooker casserole. Cheaper cuts of red meat with any vegetables you want plus stock for sauce.

Breakfasts I am doing eggs, spinach, baked beans, bacon and mushrooms. Trying to cut down on carbs and sugar mainly.

    • Any good recipe suggestions for baking chicken? Love to try out a new one

      • Last night I just whacked them in a baking tray, rubbed olive oil in, salt and pepper and then rosemary. Same for sweet potato.

        • nice. I'm going to try that out

  • Not for dinner but I like making my own muesli, make 1 kg at a time with 17% almonds, 4% pepitas, 4% sunflower seeds for about $4.

Buy Jamie's 15 minute meals, it's altomic approved

Also here are my favourite cheap snacks
    * Crackers and hummus: Cook mixed flour and water in oven served with blended chickpeas and hummus
    * Chips: Use vegetable peeler to cut potato then cook in oil.
    * Stir-fry: Cook meat and cheap vegetables in a pan.

  • I usually follow what's written on the packet.

    • Hey two minute noodles / garlic bread and pies work for me too haha lol :)

Lived on easy Mac for some time

  • This is my "go to" Chocolate mousse recipe.

http://www.pastrywiz.com/archive/kits.htm (You will need to convert to metric)

    Do this in 3 bowls.
    One for the chocolate (Melaninie)
One for the whites (stainless steel)
One for the yolks + whole egg. (Stainless steel).

    My variations are:
    a) Put the chocolate in a Melanine bowl and sit this in two kettles worth of boiling water in the sink. The chocolate melts really well that way - just stir ocassionally. I usually use Lindt at 65% from South Melbourne market.
    b) Whilst the chocolate is melting then beat the cream, and rum (instead of Cream de cacoa), with the stand mixer. Don't make the mixture too stiff.
    c) At the same time, separate out the eggs and then beat first the whites, with icing sugar, then the yolk and whole egg with a hand mixer. That way you don't have to clean the mixer between them.
    d) When everything is beaten then fold everything into the melted chocolate a third at a time. Make sure it is well mixed.
    e) Put in the fridge to set, preferable overnight.

Halving the recipe is about right for a group of 6 people.

This may seem a bit or work but, trust me, once you have made it a few times it is really easy and it is the best mousse I have ever tasted. It is a bit hit when you have to bring a dessert.

  • This is my favourite 'cheap as' and 'easy as' recipe.

Simmer chicken drumsticks in a broth made up of 1 cup soy sauce (needs to be decent quality like Kikkomen), 1 cup of white vinegar, 2 cups of water. Adjust the quantities accordingly if you're doing >4. Add some bay leaves and pepper corns. I usually do for 45-60 mins, but 30 is probably enough at a pinch.

Serve with steamed rice and veges, or just veges. Chicken has lovely savoury soy flavour, and is tender and succulent.

I usually buy the drumsticks when they're on special at $1.50/$2/kilo at Woolies. Cheap easy high protein tasty meal :)

  • tuna, steamed rice and a squeeze of lemon.
