How Much Would a PC Store Like MSY Charge to Install an SSD into a Laptop?

I've never had PC upgrades before and I have an ASUS ROG 17" laptop which I'd like to put an SSD in.
Just wondering what I should expect to pay for labor on something like this? I am clueless with computer stuff so I'd rather have an expert do it.
Also, is there a particular type/size of SSD that is required for laptops or is it just a normal SSD?
Looking at something around 512GB+insallation.

Thanks heaps!

msy would be the last place to go to

you'd be better off going to a corner pc store and asking them

Too much, probably… It's not hard, but if you've never done it before then it can be scary to DIY.

Installing the SSD? About 3 minutes of labour. Cloning your old HDD is closer to an hour depending on the total storage. I'd suggest buying the SSD at the same store as you get it installed, you'll get the best rates that way.

Most laptops take 2.5" HDDs and SSDs. Some new ones take M.2 SSDs, but that's for ultrabooks/iMacs etc and wouldn't apply to yours.

he's got an ASUS ROG laptop, which is very high end and actually supports dual drives. Most likely it supports 2.5" drive plus another 2.5" secondary bay and even M.2 if it was made later than 2014. There's an option for Raid as well in the BIOS

the instructions on how to install a drive would be included in the user's manual and will differ depending on which model you've got, but the process is extremely easy.

Search youtube for some video guides, they will make you feel comfortable. It's a very easy thing to do.
MSY/Umart should be able to install it for you, if you are buying the drive from them and you are lucky then free, else they might charge you some minimal amount.

Yeah just ask your local Facebook pc group of something I am sure some antsy pc enthusiast would not only love to do it but if you chuck in a pizza or McDonald's meal hey you are all set imo

Plus you potentially get to make a new friend and that's priceless imho in this day and age

      • Make sure you say you're a girl too.

        • Oh man a girl would increase chances by an infinity percent for sure a cute Asian girl even more instant marriage proposal haha lol jks

    call them and ask.

  • wonder if you get warranty on that installation job? LOL

  • MSY in SA wouldn't do it. Have never seen more than 1 staff in my local store at anytime with customers lined up out the door.

Just wondering what I should expect to pay for labor on something like this?

Depends if you just expect physical installation (probably all of 5 mins, very easy) or want them to transfer your existing stuff across too (many hours, might need to fix the OS after).

Also, is there a particular type/size of SSD that is required for laptops or is it just a normal SSD?

Depends on the laptop and where you want to put it. Larger laptops tend to have a normal-ish 2.5" bay. Slimmer laptops might have a slimmer bay, where you'd have to get a thin 7mm or maybe 9mm SSD - but check first. Most laptops today also have an additional (or sometimes ONLY have) a mSATA or M.2 slot, which are not standard SATA, have much smaller cards, and aren't compatible with each other either.

For best results, check your laptop's manual, and don't buy until you're sure.

BTW, "ASUS ROG 17"" isn't enough information to go on. You need the actual model number of the machine, which should be printed on a sticker on the bottom or in the battery compartment. The full model number will be something like "G750"/"G750JZ", "G751"/"G751JT", etc.. Though a decent bet with 17" is a full 2.5" bay in there.

Just youtube it and do it yourself. 5 minutes at most.

I recommend doing it yourself. If you aren't confident or never done this before, I suggest watching a Youtube tutorial on it. It is actually easier than it looks.
    Good luck.
