FLYBUYS- Promised Bonus Points for Logon, but Never Delivers

Hi Flybuy members,

Back in August, I got this email with text:

Activate Now
Offer valid until 11 August 2016

I usually view such emails online, via the 'View Online' button. Have done this several times, and each time, the webpage that I viewed online has the "Activate Now, offer valid until" date extended to somewhere in the future.

And I have activated it a number of times, and not a sign of the promised bonus points. Earlier today, when I did this, it says "Offer valid until 16 December'.

I have been giving them the benefit of doubt, that the few activations I did were somehow missed, hence no points. And so, I tried a few times to activate over the period. But I am beginning to suspect that Flybuy is using this as a ploy to entice people to logon, with no intention of allocating the points.

Hence this post. To see if this is the case or not. The value of the points are small, and activation requires small effort. But the thought that a large frequent shopper scheme will use such a ploy, and then save on some measly points at the cost of their reputation, is just weird. So I hope I am wrong.

Would like to hear from others to see if this is widespread or not. Many thanks in advance.

PS. Got to say, Qantas FF is great in this regard. There were a few short surveys etc, which promised points, and they always delivered.

    2000 points = $10, so that's 25c worth of points…
Not even worth a follow-up imo.

    • Correct. Hence not going to ring or anything.
      Typing here is easy :-)
If found to be widespread, won't even spend the few seconds to activate next time they try this again.

I've never had an email offering free points from Flybuys. I always have to buy something to get the points. Do you not shop there much and this is their way of reminding you that they still exist?

I really don't think they'd deliberately rip people off people for such a small amount of points. They want to keep customers, not annoy them.

    It definitely wasn't spam?

  • So you didn't click the link via the email?

    • Once I click "view online", it presents the same page on the browser. So I click on that Activate on the browser page. Pretty sure it is the same.

  • If the offer ends on December 16 then it might be 4 weeks from then until you will see the points.

Read the terms and conditions to see when the bonus points will be paid.

Except that I have clicked during August (when I received the email), Sep, Oct, Nov, variously across the period :-).

August until now is way beyond 4 weeks. The "valid until date" keeps getting extended, seemingly still available for activation.

PS. You have proven to be an expert where frequent shopper points are concerned. When I posted, I thought to myself, perhaps pointscrazy will reply, and indeed you did. Thank you! :-)

I've heard of these offers but never had experience with this particular offer.

I once got an offer on a docket deal which offered points for updating details. I did this and got the "update" message but never got the points. I didn't actually change any details which might have been the trigger for the points. I decided not to chase things up as it was only a small amount of points.

I've also seen offers where the valid period keeps getting extended and this makes the payment date extend as well.

Good luck. I hope the points just turn up somewhere.

You have access to 6 months worth of points entries. Go back a few months and check if the points were inserted around about the time of the first qualification. Sometimes flybuys don't put bonus points entries in the new transactions, they insert them back at the trigger date or trigger transaction date. If you don't memorise the ongoing points balance, it's easy to miss that the points were added a long way back in the transaction history.

Thank you for all the tips. It really isn't about the points - which is so measly in this instance. Neither am I adverse if all it takes is an Activate and logon. What caught my attention was whether a big scheme like FlyBuy would use such a ploy, and so became curious about others' experience.

Clearly, this is not even a common thing they do with Flybuy members, judging from the replies.
