Radio/head unit/reversing camera/GPS/DVD etc for a Camry/Aurion

Has anyone tried one of these? I was thinking of getting a reversing camera, and the head unit has a CD playing problem so maybe I should just go the hog and get something like this.

Is the audio and radio okay? How does GPS work? Any issues? Better yet, can you recommend a better alternative that fits the odd dash shape?

Thanks!

Probably worth looking at Android rather than Wince, a bit newer and better supported. Basically the electronics heart of these tends to be the same, no matter the surround used to make it fit. XDA has lots of ROMs, tech hacks etc.

Something like https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Double-2-Din-8-Quad-Core-102… . The stuff you see on AU ebay usually came from these chinese manufacturers anyway.

In theory you ought to be able to get it running Android Auto, with the new version. Getting steering column controls working over CANBUS can be fun, as I understand.

    • So it's a bit of a hassle to get working then?

Any headunit can be hassle to get working - if for no other reason than that the car manufacturers can seemingly change the guts of a car on the basis of what they have in stock at the time. They don't really build them with the idea you'll change anything, so you can open them up and find something totally different to what you expected. In particular, take a look at the wiring at the back and compare to what you actually have in your car.

Either your wince or an android unit are as likely to have problems you have to overcome - you do have to have your wits about you, including when buying, look at EXACTLY what spec is defined. Do a search in aliexpress and see how many very similar, but not quite the same results you get.

And then you'll have the issue of wiring the reversing camera through the car.

It's all doable, and these are often installed by petrolheads (not the most IT of people), but probably not for a complete numpty to think they are just going to slot in.

All I was really pointing to was the newer 1024x600 Android units over the older 800x480 wince units - which is basically them swapping out the motherboard.

        • OK thanks! I'm more concerned about things like audio quality, radio reception, responsiveness etc that you don't get with cheaper Android phones for example. Looking online, I can see roughly equivalent name brand head units for about $500 so when on special it's not too far off what these are, so maybe that's a better option.
