PlayStation 4 Pro Rumours

Hi there Ozgamers,

I am thinking to get a PS4 Pro during boxing day sale however I am uncertain if its a good time to buy it as there are heating rumours going around the internet and youtube.

Not sure if its true.

So I would like to ask the Ozbargain people with PS4 Pro to tell me their experience if there is really a heating or other issues with the console besides it not be able to play the Ultra 4k Bluray discs.

Thanks!

Go to Whirlpool and read the Pro thread. I've yet to hear my Pro even run the fan yet. I've played around 30 hours of Skyrim on 4K.

    • Thanks mate, I will have a read on the website.

30hrs of Skyrim on 4K? lolz

I am just looking forward to get the Last Guardian.

  • The PS4 Pro runs slightly more louder, more hotter, draws more power and is slightly larger than the Original PS4.
So its not really that good.
There's a clear improvement in those departments when compared to the XB1 Slim and PS4 Slim.

However, it is ~x2 more powerful so its actually decently efficient.

My biggest gripe with the PS4 Pro is the release date.
It's coming out in 2016, when it should've come out in 2013… because the PS4/XB1 were VERY underpowered upon release.
Unlike previous console releases such as the PS3, Xbox 360, Xbox, PS2, PS1, SNES, NES.
All of these consoles were quite powerful when compared to PC's of the day.
Not always high-end, but at the minimum they were mid-range.

The PS4 was low-end when it released, and the XB1 was even worse.
By doubling the PS4's capabilities, do you actually get to mid-range PC's…. and that was mid-range back in 2013.
The PS4 Pro will stay in the mid-range for a short while, but it will be low-end soon (2017 ?).
There's still AMD's Zen and AMD's Vega coming, not to mention 10nm ARM Cortex A73-A35 chips too.

-_- well its something sony needs to look at asap because I was really excited with the 8tflops of power lol

    • As an owner of one, it doesn't run louder at all it's considerably quieter than the launch ps4 i had prior that sounded like a jet taking off, I havent noticed a heating issue whatsoever playing dishonored 2 and titanfall 2 either.

The performance issues are because games are upscaled to 4k then drop down to 1080p regardless of what tv you're using, this will most likely change in an upcoming patch but even so the performance drop is about 5 frames max, barely noticeable.

I got one because my ps4 had a disc ejector problem, needed more space, and the quieter running and EB had a good trade in deal and got dishonored 2 for 39, also future proofing. If you don't have a 4k tv I'd wait a couple of months for a price drop or good bundle around boxing day

Agreed, it definitely isn't louder at my place. Have hardly heard it running myself.

  • Okay good to learn from Whirlpool Forum on the experience of the PS4 Pro owners

    1) The heating rumours is true.
So if the console suppose to operate cooler than the older PS4 and is still heating up means that the console is drawing 300W all the time….Not sure if this is a heatsink or cooling vents issue. I think -_- they need a water cooling system like the pc.

    2) During the test demo of FFXV in Japan the PS4 Pro console was showing signs of problems…..Again not sure if this is the firmware issue on the console heating up rapidly until it gets hang…..

    3) The SSD/SSHD hdd replacement is recommended as PS4 Pro supports sata 3 compared to the older PS4 models only support sata 2. Youtube show significant speed boost from 20-50% reduction in time loads.

    4) PS4 Pro blurays hardware is identical with the hardware of a 4K HD bluray drive except for the codecs. Therefore its up to sony if they want to make the PS4 Pro console 4K HD bluray compatible as it just a different format codecs(265 HEVC video codec). I really hope they do it so it make perfect sense to buy the console more and more value added to the console.

    5) Some PS4 games runs poorer on the PS4 Pro compared to the older PS4 console…something needs fixing.

    6) You need a 4K TV to enjoy the visual upgrades. Well that's 1/2 true it will still look great with the downscale of 4k to 1080p as there are improvement on graphics of the game/framerate.

    7) PS4 Pro is using the HDCP 2.2 cable ……guess that's the 4k compatible format to fully utilize the 4k pics with HDR effect/or colour? Not sure .

    8) Should you buy a PS4 Pro now? or wait until boxing day….
At $559……retail price which is also the testers/evaluators/fanboy/early adopters price tag which they are willing to pay but with someone like me, who has already got a PS4…..I just got this urge to wait as there will be something good waiting to bundle or surprise the consumers this holiday season.

I hope that's the case until the Last Guardian comes out!

    Ooi "Trico/Turico!! lets go"

    • The SSD's aren't worth it.
A 512GB SSD will fill up very quickly with games.
Would you really want to spend the $300+ on an SSD, on a console that costs around $300-$400 ????

A SSHD would be more ideal.
However, now you're really stuck with 2.5in 9mm drives.
And I'm not sure they make any SSHD's at that small size/thickness.

Previous PS4 model had a hack where you could change the sliding cover with a raised one instead in order to fit in 3.5in drives.

      • I actually use the 3.5" external drive SSHD for my old PS4 it looks sorta ugly as the case is open with cables coming out lolz. But it works great! never had much heating issues and with 2tb…..I am not worried for space for some time until recently….I have to uninstall some older titles lolz.

I purchased one on release day.

Gets a little hotter and a little louder (and I mean ever so marginally - not enough to be annoying), but what do you expect with x2 the computing power?
Uses a bit more power (but not the 300W it's rated at, that's just an extreme maximum), but once again - 2x the computing power.
The games I've tired so far (TLOU, Mafia 3, Watch Dogs 2, CoD IW, CoD MW:R) all look noticeably better even to untrained eyes (I am running a 4K TV though, so I can't say if 1080p is noticeably better).

Only 'problem' I'm having is my download speed being capped (at times) at 6Mbps compared to my 100Mbps connection, on all 3 connection methods (2.4GHz, 5GHz and Ethernet). Jump over to my original PS4, downloading the same file goes at about 70Mbps. Don't know what's going on there, but I'm sure they'll sort it out.

    I'm very happy with it.

  • O_o capped speed….. that is crazy. You sure its not your modem or cable/wireless issue/setting?

    • No. All settings same as original PS4, plus changed a heap of stuff and nothing helped.

It's just odd it only does it sometimes (sometimes a pause and unpause will fix it, other times it won't).

Couple of forum posts on various websites indicating the same thing across the world.

      • You should send your feedback to Sony to see what they say. Just need a reply from them to see if it is normal….if they say its not….i would change my console for a new one if it was me.

  • I remember there was a rumour about loads of launch ps4s being faulty. Something to do with the USB port I think. It turned out not to be a problem. It's obvious that some unlucky people will have faulty consoles. There's always going to be problems with mass produced electrical goods. Fortunately, I've personally never had to deal with a faulty console before.

Just want to know what game would be excluded to PS4 Pro…

  • This is off topic FFXV physical copies is leaked…….in peru

OMG its only 18th of November, ….

    • Wow lol, that's crazy.
