Today instead of offering you something awesome to do in your city at an unbeatable price we've decided to support a really worthy cause. Today is Red Nose Day, which helps raise money for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)? So buy as many vouchers as you can afford for $10 each and help save a baby's life.
As someone who doesn't have kids, I didn't even know what SIDS was until my nephew, Jay, stopped breathing in his sleep at 10 months and 10 days old. I always thought SIDS was when babies rolled over in their sleep and couldn't breathe. That's part of it, and due to great education programs for new mothers, they have reduced that happening - but as it turns out in Jay's case (and many others) there are still unexplained reasons why babies just stop breathing. I understand that it has even been known to happen while a mother holds her baby in her arms.
Some theories say it's brain related, or even that there could be a problem with the heart, but nobody really knows, and it's organisations like SIDS and Kids, and the researchers at the Centenary Institute and Children's Hospital at Westmead, that are working hard to find a cause and a solution.
My sister Joanne, and some other mothers who have been through similar tragedies, were not content to sit idly by. So they set up a foundation to raise money for these causes called the Splash of Red Foundation. Unfortunately SIDS is not talked about as much as other medical conditions because the topic is so sad. Please don’t allow the sadness of what has happened to prevent us from finding a cause, and then hopefully a cure.
