Which Home Security (Cameras) Deals to Look out for This Sale Season ?

My minimum requirements from the visual home security kit are :

1) At least 3 all weather cameras (the higher the definition, the better).
2) No need to pan and tilt - but if that doesn't cost extra its alright.
3) Motion sensor
4) Infrared night cameras /low light cams

Do most cameras need a power source ? Are all home security cameras working on wi-fi anyway wired for power ? Are there any true wireless security cameras (-if not, will need to get a sparky out for some wiring)

Really dont care if I can view the camera feed on my mobile. As long as I can record on to a cloud drive, thats all am after.

What products have served the OzB community well ? I am preparing to keep an eye out for the Black Friday deals, so am in no hurry yet.

Any particularly outstanding deals that I should keep an eye on in the coming weeks ?

Cheers,

P.S: I have looked at the following ozb threads :
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/220787 - Of no use to me as it talks about total smart security
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/65563 - 5 years old and no similar deals for Darwin
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/253155 - Has no security cameras

  • Netgear Arlo

    1) supports up to 5 cameras for free, additional requires paid subscription. 720p definition
    2) No pan/tilt, fixed cameras
    3) Motion sensor: yes
    4) Infrared night camera: yes

True wireless, runs on 4x CR123 batteries per camera. No option to hardwire power.

Recording to Netgear Cloud with data retention of recordings up to a week/1GB with free subscription.

N.B. This system only works if you have internet connectivity, no local storage, no other cloud option except Netgear Cloud.

    • Thanks for replying.

    • This is looking more and more attractive. Given I will have to pay a licensed sparky to run the power cables. AND the fact it offers free cloud recording. AND if ever I move, I can simply pick these and move along. To anyone else who may read this answer, there indeed is an option to plugin a USB cable and run the cam without batteries ( while on vacation etc ) I have set a few pricehipster alerts for the fall in price of this. 4 cams cost about 900 bucks.

      • Dam looking at these. Thought you were talking about local storage then, would have been good as my parents internet sucks

  • We just purchased a Swann system, more expensive to install but fewer ongoing costs. 1TB harddrive for storage.

Arlo - CR123 aren't that cheap and you need to keep buying them forever (replacement once every 2-3 months or less if you push distances), also subscription for better recording options. Crim could also steal the camera if they find it! :p.

    • Thanks for replying. Would you know if these go on sale on Boxing day ?

      • +1

No idea mate, only find out a couple days before.

  • Have you considered IP cameras that use POE? Would that be an option to consider?
Do you have an existing server that could be used to record to?
