Yamaha vs Denon AVR

Hi all,
I want to build a 3.1 home theatre system for 60" tv in our living room. Its a fairly large open space area. Starting the build with AVR, would be adding 2 bookshelf speakers soon and will do rest of the build later. System will be used mostly for movies and very rarely for music. Dont know the difference between dolby and dts and which one is most widely used. Without getting into too technical details I would like an AVR with ability to play/decode most (not necessarily all) movies sound.

I have shortlisted following AVRs

Yamaha RX-V381
http://au.yamaha.com/en/products/audio-visual/av-receivers-a…

Denon AVR-X520BT
http://au.denon.com/au/product/hometheater/avreceivers/avrx5…

Can you please advise which one is good? If none of these, can you please advise anything else in a budget around $500. Discarded Onkyo for its failure rate. I want to buy only from HN because of a special promo on my Amex card.
I dont have bluray player. My tv connects to ATV4 which has plex installed and that fetches movies from my iMac. So hdmi connecter is good enough. Dont need many other type of connectors. My TV has ARC but not sure what ARC port on AVR is needed for?

Thx

Just curious what's the offer you have from amex? Other stores have the Yamaha listed for around $130 cheaper than HN

I hope I'll be able to get HN to price match it to other store and then use my amex

  • why not go second hand? what book shelfs are you going to use with them?

    • I was after Q acoustics, but I have missed on that deal for center speakers…For speakers, I guess I might have to wait until another deal comes up.

  • That Denon does not have any form of room correction, where the Yamaha has YPAO (at least the entry level version of it). Personally I'd go for the one that offers it.

    • Denon says in description that "The AVR-X520BT comes with a setup measuring microphone that adjusts critical system parameters for your speaker system and listening space."

      • Hmmm, under "Specs - Sound Enhancements" all the Audyssey formats have "X". Unless they are using something other than Audyssey? Doesn't say anything about another form of room correction in the specs.

        • so audyssey is the one which corrects the sound, is it??? sorry I am a complete nobe in this space..

        • @webjockey:

          Correct.

          @Vieira4:

Thanks mate.. will get yamaha over the weekend

  • Denon has an in built Set-Up Assistant – Yamaha don’t. This means the paper guide in the carton can be short and simple! Yamaha’s is complex!
Denon has a FREE Bluetooth app to control the AVR-X520. Yamaha does not (You can stream music/change volume using Bluetooth to the Yamaha, but not change inputs/settings/sound modes, etc. Denon can.)
