Hard Disk Recovery Software for PC and/or Mac

What recovery software do you use?
I have a hard disk that was accidentally formatted ( I think) and I was hoping to recover the contents. I have tried a few different programs from the interwebs but without much luck. Many free ones are limited or don't work. Any suggestions PC and/or Mac? Free or low cost would be ideal. Thanks in advance…

    I usually use the free version of recuva https://www.piriform.com/recuva/download works sometimes.

    i've had success with getdataback
    has a free demo, see if it works.

    i hope your disk has not had continued use since you realised what you have done (it should now be accessed only as external usb drive or as a secondary drive if internal)

    TestDisk works for just about every operating system, but it's text-based and it has no GUI. It can run off a thumb drive and is a portable app. Very handy.
