PayPal Refunded Carousell Scam

Hi all,

Just thought I would share my recent experience with PayPal as it has always been unclear whether PayPal will actually help you with purchases made on Gumtree/Carousell etc. I paid $400+ to a seller on Carousell which was a relatively reasonable price (different in hindsight) for a used i5 6600 and GTX 1060 6GB. I used the PayPal payment method with buyer protection eligibility. Waited two weeks, didn't receive the items, seller never responded to any of my emails, Facebook messages (blocked me), or Carousell messages making it clear to me that it was a scam. Opened a dispute with PayPal and escalated it straight away to a claim and fortunately in 11 days they found the case in my favour after the seller never responded to the claim. They have credited the amount back to my bank account and I am currently waiting for it to process.

  • Thanks for posting good to know protection does work for sales like that.

  • As a buyer, do I have buyer protection when using PayPal?

Currently there is no buyer protection whilst using PayPal as a payment option on Gumtree. If you have any questions about a payment you have made using PayPal, please contact PayPal Customer Support here.

Hard to believe when there's nothing to say that Paypal gives buyer protection for either Gumtree or Carousell.

    • Why would I lie about this…

  • Why does it matter where you met the person you bought an item from ? its a private transaction, and if you dont receive the item, then you can still make a claim.

    • That was always my opinion too. Judging from previous forum posts on here and WP PayPal used to have a section in their protection policy that defined a Gumtree transaction as ineligible. The policy has been changed since then.

  • How did you pay for the item? Did you send money to the required email address or does Carousell slash Gumtree have paypal on it? Just wondering as I usually do the same (send money with buyers protection) to an email, so far I've been lucky and haven't been scammed but find this useful.

    • Sent to an email, I don't think Gumtree nor Carousell actually allow you to pay directly through their platform, just communicate and advertise.
