Driving Headphones Takes Power. A Lot of Power.

My current device, the Sony Z5 Premium, sips very little juice after tweaking. For example I usually have ~140 hours on battery left using half screen brightness after charging. I also use it fairly consistently so I notice large changes in battery usage.

I recently went back to wired headphones after (courageously) using Bluetooth APTX headphones for a while and I was shocked at how much battery drain using wired headphones is using.

I'm guessing this varies according to what headphones are used but I'm using 20% battery for my short 30 minute commute. Bluetooth uses 1 or 2%.

Some of you are probably going well derr but I was kinda shocked at how much it does uses and I've never seen battery use as a "plus" when considering Bluetooth headphones.

  • Full size headphones? I've never used 20% battery driving my Sennheiser earbuds, your battery use seems excessive.

  • That's unusual because when I use wired headphones, half an hour of music streaming only takes about 4-5%

  • I notice quite a lot of battery drain when using 32-40 ohm earphones on my Android device.

Apparently it is recommended to use a portable amp.

  • I probably should do a small test before saying anything but I don't think I noticed much difference in battery life with my earphones (and I use a 300 ohm earphone, EtyKids). I think it'd depend on what kind of earphone you use? Something that has noise cancelling would probably drain battery if it uses the phone to achieve that; I think Sony Active Noise Cancelling one that was bundled with Z3 Compact tablet (MDR-NC31EM) does that.
