Hi all,
Something I discovered today, thought I'd like to share with you all.
Uber is now completely legal in Sydney, with a $4 pickup fee. Previously if you travelled with more than 1 person to Sydney Airport International or Domestic via train, you get slugged with high fees. I noticed you can now get off at Mascot station, then Uber your way across.
My trip from Strathfield to Airport Domestic, getting off at Mascot - approx $3
.37 each person, Uber across costs $8.04, totalling $14.78 for 2 people (Thursday midday). Each people on the train would've cost $16.77 ($33.54 for two people), that's a saving of over $18!
On my return, Uber costs me $12 (includes $4 station access fee), same train fare. For two people, that is still a saving of $14!
The only downsides I can think of is the State government having to pay the station access fee, and that Uber drivers are getting a short fare (not exactly sure it's a bad thing, the minimum of $8 per trip is to compensate for this).
Other hacks are not so great or significantly more complicated if you have some luggage or are visitors, the train to Arncliff/Rockdale then bus 400, or the Mascot walk to airport option.
I guess the equivilant for the International terminal is Arncliff -> Uber.
Let me know if you like/dislike this, and whether you'd recommend this to fellow Ozbargainers!
Thanks for the synopsis.
