It's within their rights to do so - if it's priced too high, no one will buy it, and the people who are stupid enough to buy it without doing any research are mainly at fault.

    • Yup pretty much the law of self responsibility act of 1932 if you ain't smart you dumb haha lol bro

      ITT: Capitalism.

  • +6

Five people on SportsBets yesterday placed a bet that the world will end in 2025. Some people are just really stupid with their money.

  • +2

there was a $1000 one as well i saw on gumtree /ebay. Hope the guy bought heaps and then Nintendo releases so many that its pointless to resell.

    • +3

The guys at EB games said a second run is expected before Xmas

  • +3

Just buy one in December or next year when lots will be in stock. Whats the rush?

    • +2

But I can't bare to have a NES 31.1 years after release instead of 31.0!!!

It's not like I could be playing these games and more on emulators!!!

      • -1

You can't be naked to have a NES?

It's bear as in bear a weight. Not bare as in naked.

  • +1

    Good luck to them.

  • -1

Yes I saw some idiots on Gumtree too selling at 399,400,600, even one guy at 1000.

You see the problem with these people…..they are not a collector for sure (its like share market) you don't buy them to sell them off immediately. You need to keep them for a period of time lets say….20 to 30 or more years to then bring them out again when everyone has forgotten about it and they will maybe pay that extra price you would like it for.

Making a quick buck with sold out console is not really a fear of loss….as there is no loss in the first place as they will be batch 2,3,4 and so forth until everybody have one of those at home……

Futhermore Nintendo didn't say that they will only make x amount of the consoles.
If they did then its wise to stock up.

Good luck in stocking them up.

Note: $100 bucks for a 8bit console to relive the experience? no thanks, I rather spend the money on Gumtree for a second hand next gen portable console with that money.

Again there is always some sucker fish out there who will spent such money without researching, or some whose got money more zeroes that both your hands can count them.

I'd say the best of both worlds would be a RetroPi, so you can play any game/console including SNES/NES/Megadrive etc.

Roughly the same price (more with a wireless modded controller).

      • -5

How is an emulator that doesn't work sometimes the best of both worlds?

        • +5

Not sure what you're doing mate, but I've never had any issues on any older consoles. Stop claiming 'sometimes doesn't work' and give more details.

        • You can play everything up to PS1 reliably.

        • @gokhanh:

Very few Gamecube/Wii games don't work perfectly in Dolphin these days…

        • +2

@mgowen: I was referring to Nametab's comment about Retropie, which can reliably emulate all games up until the PS1 era, N64 notwithstanding, even with a Raspberry Pi 3. But yes, I've had good experience with Dolphin too :)

      • I don't know much about these pi's but have read they are much better…so is there a site that I can get one with the wireless controls and possibly one that looks like the NES? I saw a DIY project somewhere but def rather just pay for one :)

    • Exactly, you can get emulators which is all 100% legal if you own those games.

Plus, how much were they selling when they first came out? I can't imagine it would be cheap. If it was like $300 each then they are losing a ton of money.

I'll admit, I'm technically one of these people.. but I didn't go out and intend to do this.

A friend was desperate to get one, so I went to a nearby store on my way to work. There were people gathering at 7am and only 11 consoles in the store (and this is a CBD Westfield store). My mate ended up getting one, but I only found out when I was 2 from the counter. Bought it anyway and offered it to a few friends who might be interested (at cost), but no takers.

I threw it on eBay when I got to work, 'buy it now' and went quite a lot under these stupid $499 items. It sold in 3mins. I'm shouting my family dinner tonight with the profits.

So.. TL;DR - not everyone who does this is scum :/

    • +1

Wow. Honestly in this case, more power to you. I think if you don't do it intentionally its not a big deal. But if you're bagging all the stock to then resell, it's pretty skeevy, really. I get that technically it's OK, and its in their rights to do whatever, but… I don't know. It just feels kinda oogy. That said I'd be tempted to do it at least once, if I had the opportunity.

But I didn't even know this was a thing again— just saw a Sega Mega Drive version in the catalogue today. I think I paid $30 dollars for mine way back when, and its $89 at the moment. What's happening? It really wasn't that good a console. I wonder if all this nostalgia is a sign of the times.

      • +1

If they redo a n64 I'd buy that, place 50 games maybe a cart reader and I'm there. Never had as much fun as 64.

        • I'd be in in that!

  • Sad that I missed out, was hoping to buy one today at Target and BigW but they sold out this morning. No chance this afternoon according to the retailers.
Market will probably be over flooded due to resellers. Good luck to the people who do this, but assuming they will not be rare if they are only being purchased to resell.

    • Not so sure on that one.. I can only speak for people at the stores I was at/near, but they were all talking about Nintendo Switch, 3DS, talking about the short cable length on this console..

You could only get one per customer and they seemed like actual players, not just resellers.

  • +2

Ebay is a joke, people can make high cost listings and it doesn't mean anything. You have to search for completed listings to see what things are selling for.
    http://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=nintendo+cl…
No one's buying them for these high costs.

I imagine Nintendo will be making more and they'll drop in price, like the Amiibo figures did.

    • +4

Actually… it's "sold" listings that you have to look at. Twenty plus selling today for over $300.

  • +6

Don't buy it, get a Raspberry Pi and stop complaining!

      • +3

        er… are you sure?

      • +4

        You don't work properly.

        • +6

          Savage.

      • +1

You realise the nintendo device is an emulation??

    • +5

      This!

For about the same money you can get a RPi 3, couple of controllers, NES case (there's also a set of instructions for a Lego NES case out there somewhere) and you've got something that will play thousands of games across a bunch of different systems from Nintendo (NES, Super, N64), Sega (MS, Genesis, Mega Drive), Commodore (Amiga) as well as coiners / arcade games.

I think the mini NES's are awesome, but can't help but think they're the sort of thing that you'd play for a couple of hours on the day you bought it but from that point forward it'd be a dust collector. At least going down the Pi route you gain some knowledge along the way.

      • how does the N64 emulator run on RPi 3? On the Rpi 2 it doesnt run well for me

    • Exactly! Retropie all the way!

  • Just ordered one from COTD.

    Dont forget Cashrewards 3.2%.

  • +1

Anybody know where I can get a power cable for this? And can anyone recommend a link for an extension cable for the controller…..Cheers.

    • +1

Any USB power adapter will work.
Mine runs off the USB port on my Tv no dramas.

eBay. Look for the wii extension cable (for the nunchuck)

    • Can't wait for these people spending $300 plus to open the box and see they still need to buy a power adaptor…

  • Argh! Told my sister I was getting one her birthday, didn't manage to get one. Really hope I can get one in the second shipment. Shit shit shit.

    • +1

Pre orders at EB games from midday 14/11.
      Online only!

  • I wonder how much I'd get for my unopened re-released Famicon I bought from Superpotato last year would be worth…

  • +1

wtf I should have bought more at when amazon ahd them for $70 DELVIERED!

  • What people list items for and what they actually sell for are 2 different things.

Keep in mind eBay can be notorious for shill bidding. legit. sales on eBay look to be around $300-$400.

For anyone that collects retro gaming stuff they'd know that the scene has been absolutely savaged by resellers looking to make small amounts off items and the increased amount of interest and competition over the past 2-4 years, so this shouldn't surprise. See the Pokemon 2DS, Smash Bros 3DS, Amiibos and Club Nintendo stuff.

  • Nintendo have a habit of releasing products in scare quantities and a tactic they've used many times in the past (with consoles, games and in particular - Amiibos). It does nothing more then advantage scalpers and annoy people who genuinely want the product. Personally, I'm a bit over it and one of the reasons why I was put off from buying this when it was first announced and have made no effort to get one.

I love their innovation in always wanting to do something different but including a short controller cord, no power supply (regardless that it's just USB cable) and not being able to add any additional games to this is a really backwards way of doing things.

  • +2

As expected, at 12pm the EB site fell over completely. We managed to add one to our cart, then it just hung on the address page doing nothing. That was replaced by the EB splash screen, which has now also fell over :D

    • And now EB Facebook page confirming all sold out. JB sold out of theirs this morning before even announcing.

  • I must take back my words about the sucker fish. Apparently these people who are stocking up consoles knows that Australians are not suckerfish at all, just there are so many bloody rich Australians out there who doesn't really mind paying more.
Spare nintendo controller is going as much or more than an xbox one elite controller…..just amazing.

EBGAMES WEBSITE CRASHED SO MANY TIMES UNTIL THEY MADE THEIR MAIN WEBPAGE WITH THE INFORMATION BELOW.
