Rechargeable Battery for Solar Powered Garden Lights - Is Eneloop OK?

I am thinking of buying a few solar powered garden lights from ebay (gutter mounted type). Most of them required 1 x AA 1.2v/1200mAh Ni-MH battery to run ( battery not supplied). Not sure whether the 1.2V AA Eneloop (1900mAh) will work with these lights? Please advise. Thanks.

  • Sure can. Aldi batts are cheaper and just as good for the price.

    • Will there be any problem in charging up the eneloop since the solar panel is designed to charge a 1200mAh battery only?

      • not really any problems. it might just mean that the solar panel only has the capacity to charge up to 1200mAh. or 1200mAh is all you actually need for the light to work effectively.

        As whooah1979 says - go for aldi batteries. they are inexpensive and are decent quality. or Ikea Ladda ni-mh batteries.

    Heres a comparision-

    You require 1x 1.2v 1200 mAh battery (Battery A)

    1200mA is 1.2A
    1 hour is 60 min,3600 seconds…

    From the equation q=it
    We can find the charge in coulombs
    Q=1.2x3600
    Q=4320 Coulombs

    Work=voltage*charge
    Work=1.2x4320
    Work=
    5184J

    You want to use 1x 1.2v 1900mAh (Battery B)

    1900mA is 1.9A
    1 hour is 60 min,3600 seconds…

    From the equation q=it
    We can find the charge in coulombs
    Q=1.9x3600
    Q=6840 Coulombs

    Work=voltage*charge
    Work=1.2x6840
    Work=
    8208J

    Battery B is more efficient* as it has an extra ~3024J of energy.

    With the power rating and efficiency we may determine the amount of time the battery will last before diminishing.

    Anything else just ask.

    I am not a sparky just a sUpersmarkey
    (PS: Its realy late/early i dont know if the math checks out ;)

    *Efficient in this context means will last longer because of the greater amount of energy.

    • I dont know what you said but here's vote

      • Ugga Bugga
        enloop good
        More power
        Much energy
        Thanky votey

  • Since the battery gets charged every day, you don't really need a low-self discharge battery like an eneloop.
    So if you have any cheap old regular Ni-MH ones lying around use them, and put the eneloops in your remote controls.

    • I agree, Eneloops are overkill for solar lights. I use cheap Chinese ones off eBay for mine, and also I did some research a while ago which decided me that NiCd is better than NiMh for solar lights. So I get cheap NiCd's on eBay.

      • Sorry for necro posting but can you recommend any good ground mounted solar lights with motion sensing?
