Just because your wife got an email with the same code doesn't mean that the code isn't tied to accounts which were targeted. Companies often do that email out a generic code to multiple targeted customers but the code is tied to those targeted accounts and can't be used on non targeted accounts. Only way to know for sure is if some strangers try the code. Like those who create fresh accounts today and try the code.
