AmEx, Signing Instead of PIN

So last week I got my new Qantas Discovery card solely for Shop Small and it was activated immediately. Anyhow I made my first purchase today but was surprised when asked to sign for the payment after inserting into the chip reader. I wasn't even required to provide my PIN. I thought banks stopped using signatures for security reason, eg protect against identity theft. Is this typical for AmEx issued cards?

  • Double-check that you actually have a PIN set up on the website. Maybe call them to confirm.

I ran into the same issue with my Amex Essential card. Pretty sure I set my PIN, but it came up as unset when I checked. Worked fine after I set it.

    • Yes, it was the first thing I checked.

  • I'm almost certain i had a PIN setup on one of my amex cards, but when I made a large purchase it asked me to sign.

  • Yeh Amex is really weird with still requiring signature. It's nothing to do with having pin set up. I have them set up but some cards still require signature

  • Maybe they do it to catch out people using their wife/sister/brother/dog's supplementary card.

  • Sometimes varies. My bank issued Amex works as a tap and go, or with PIN for over $100.
If there is a network issue though, it says to sign the docket (this happened recently at Coles).

  • +1

The machine may have been off-line to Amex. As a fall back, it reverts to old school sign the voucher.
