Suggestions for Cabinet of Curiosities - OzBargain-Style

I want to have my own Cabinet of Curiosities, but I want to spend as little money as possible.

What items could I get/buy that are interesting, unique, weird and most importantly CHEAP?

Thanks in advance!

Coins? You can get old coins, particularly poor condition Roman coins cheap and they look cool. Rock samples or small fossils look cool too.

Insects pinned to card, preserved^ mice in jars, and pressed flowers are DIY options.

Guess it depends on your angle!

^ Don't use formaldehyde, if you want a preserving liquid recipe PM me.

    • Wow thanks for the ideas! I thought ancient coins would cost a fortune.

      Is preserving animals your hobby?

Rare coins are expensive, but the romans minted coins in huge volumes, so especially with modern metal detectors finding the equivalent of a roman 1 cent coin is easy, so there's tons around.

My hobbies are art and music but my SO is a lab tech, so one of the parts of their job is preserving (or topping up) specimens.

    My favourite idea:
Commemorative badges issued to Soviets to celebrate their space program successes. Eg.:

Is this the kind of thing you are after?

    • Yeah I'm open to anything. The badge looks cool and cheap enough! Why is it so cheap?

They gave them out to every school kid who got an A etc.

A few years ago I went through a stage of buying sheets of soviet era stamps from a seller in Poland.

As well as small stacks of old currencies. I have a small shoe box of various (and basically) worthless notes. But they look interesting.

Now that DSE is gone their stuff should have some collectability value now

What sort of things are you interested in?

        Collect things based on that.

For instance, I like star wars, so there is a plethora of collectibles available, and yes, even interesting/unique items in amongst the mass produced toys

        • I have collected items like old cameras, circulated Australian coins with special designs, interesting souvenirs from other countries. I am just looking for other interesting objects ideas that doesn't cost much.

So far the answers have been great!

    Zimbabwe 100 billion note

  • If you haven't seen it, I think you will like this:

    But it isn't cheap.

    • Yeah thanks I have seen it before. Apart from it's price, I try not to collect something that's made specifically for collecting.

Your Soviet badge idea is amazing! It's something nice to show & tell, and doesn't cost much!
