.com registration isn't really a bargain. namecheap.com sells .com domain names for
USD9.69 (which is AUD11.04 right now according to google) as their regular price. Sometimes they have coupons which lets you get around a dollar off that price too.

Also, namecheap's control panel is fantastic.

Ah, but what do you get for that price… ;-) There will always be bargain registrars, just like there will be mid range ones with more service and more resources for that dollar and highly exorbitant ones still charging what was the going rate in 1995.

      • +3

What are you offering that is different and justifies your price compared to the bargain registrars?

        • Actually, we offer quite a lot for that price. ;-)

24x7 phone support based in Australia instead of email support or an overseas call centre (you never think you need it 'til you need it). Three month subscription to NETT magazine to all new customers. Weekly newsletters that aren't just promos but genuine small business advice, tutorials, news and more. One of the most reliable hosting networks in Australia (and if you think that doesn't matter for domains, see what's happening with Crazy Domains today with people unable to even administer their hosted domains http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=832887&p=…)…

Sure, many people don't need support and don't need small business advice and really just need a no-frills domain at wholesale prices - but for reliability, support, resources and an efficient online administration panel, then a little more money is great value.

          • @Netregistry: "One of the most reliable hosting networks in Australia"

            What about in the world?

Over the internet, none of that really matters - unless you really really need super fast ping time.

Also, that's a good reason why I'd never mix a hosting service with a domain name registrar service. If there's a dispute with your hosting service, they can hold your domain name at ransom.

Of course, none of this is relevant to the topic - we're talking about .com domain name registration here, not hosting services!

@zo1dberg: Yes, the global village and all that! ;-) It is very true that Australia is a different market to the US. Some people are comfortable hosting overseas and only using .com. Many Australian businesses need .au domains which aren't available to overseas registrars. If all you need is a .com, then no, our offer probably isn't for you. But if you are an Australian business looking for .au and related services to launching online, then there's a lot to be said for going local with a trusted provider.

@Netregistry: Agree with what you have replied.
I actually use Netregistry for domains, hosting and email.
I prefer to use them for their .com.au service and their support is pretty good for small business with the client console very easy to use.
This means the people I deal with who aren't all that net savvy can look after their own domain rather easily and don't need to call me for everything.
I'm more than happy with the service they provide.

I also use www.doteasy.com for myself because its cheap and suitable for my needs.

      • DNS, great service, bargain price, fantastic control panel and a well known, reputable company that's been around for years. I've been using them since 2005 and haven't had a problem. Their control panel is so good that i've only ever contacted them maybe a couple of times, and always had a prompt response.

How does your service compare to this?
        http://www.namecheap.com/learn/domain-registration/domain-fe…

I can see that you charge $19.95 a year for stuff you get for nothing at namecheap -
        http://www.netregistry.com.au/domain-name-registration/Domai…

They also have live 24/7 support as well. Never used it, but i've never had to.

        • That's good that they provide all that, but don't forget, Namecheap is not in Australia and cannot register .au domain names. Within the Australian market - and there are good reasons why people choose to host locally or use .au - it's a different comparison.

          • @Netregistry: That's true - namecheap doesn't do .au, but I was talking about .com domains, and that is not a different comparison as you assert.

As far as registering a domain name with an Australian company goes, you don't need to register with the same comapany that you host with and you know this, so please don't confuse the issue.

You can register a .com domain with a foreign company and host with an Australian hosting service if you really need to host in Australia. Also, i'd like to reiterate that i'd recommend against hosting with the same company you register your domain name with - it's too much of a risk and there have been many horror stories.

  • Yes what do you provide thats different? If you can't justify the difference thats a Neg vote from me

    • See above…

  • Gratuitous headline for a bargain. Grow up!

    Grump!

    • whats wrong with the headline? great reason to neg a deal…its not called OZTitle mate. + from me to void this neg

  • sheesh…everyone take a breath. It's a decent offer. Don't buy if you don't like.

    • Nothing wrong with encouraging competition, is there? Isn't that what ozbargain is about?

      • dude…agree.

  • Can I transfer a .org domain for $10 a year for 5 years?

  • +1

Sweet… just bought a .com.au cheaper than I pay for my others..

  • Look out taxman, people are buying domain names!
