Urgent! Best credit card for family travel insurance?

Hi guys,

I'm booking a trip for my partner and family in a few hours on credit card and trying to figure out which one is best to put payment on. The trip is for myself and my family, and my girlfriend. She is a supplementary card member on my Amex Platinum Edge.

All between myself and family, we have a Amex Platinum Edge, ANZ Rewards Black and HSBC Platinum. Im trying to read up on which one is best for travel insurance but i cannot figure out if they 'family', and by that i mean everyone who has a name on a ticket i pay for. Any suggestions?

So much to consider it's hard to say. However, there's a very real chance you can actually hit coverage on multiple insurances.

On a recent trip we actually met the minimum requirements for two insurance policies (two separate cards) as one asked for the outgoing flights to be booked using the card, and the other just asked for certain pre-paid minimum spend.

When we ran into a flight cancellation, one card offered us $275 AUD to book a hotel in the existing city; while the other offered to compensate us for the loss in the destination city. We ended up opting for the $275 AUD in the existing city as our destination hotel was only around $200. Could probably have double-dipped on both policies but we didn't.

Also, in the past when I've put through a purchase insurance claim I believe I was told ANZ FF Black doesn't have an excess for it. Sadly, I bought it on a previous card that did have a A$75 excess.

  • You must read the PDS for each card's insurance.

IIRC, AmEx Plat Edge only covers the main card holder

Ok, I can help you here as I have 2 of these cards (AMEX/ ANZ)…and spent a week confirming PDS statements with the AMEX/ ANZ.

    2 things before I start.

    1. Your Amex card will only cover you/ family/ "spouse" if you book the mode of travel on the card (ie all flights). Your ANZ rewards (same coverage) only requires a $250 holiday spend to activate (ie hotel booking). * Note - The definition of Spouse can be tricky, married/ possibly defacto, but I will tell you what I do below to get around it.

    2. Are you looking to hire a car domestically? ANZ provides $5000 cover (with a $300 excess if you need to claim). AMEX Platinum Edge has no car cover what so ever.

    • So this is what I do:

    A) Book flights with AMEX on my card (assuming no surcharge more than the cost of travel insurance). Using my GF's address (as we have separate houses).

    B) Book a hotel / or at least $250 worth of a hotel on my GF's ANZ card using my address (this is important).

    This way:

If they claim a spouse requires 'marriage' then you are both covered via separate cards anyway.

If they are happy with a defacto arrangement and need proof (normally in the form of bills sent to the same address as yours, you have nailed this as you have set their address as yours, and the bills will match). In this scenario you may effectively have double cover, and if you need to claim, only pay one excess.

*Edit - PS. Immediate family/ kids are covered. Check your PDS, search "who is covered". Call them for peace of mind.

I have a basic ANZ rewards card (not black). Does this coverage apply to me as well do you know?

Read the PDS, it's usually immediate family of card holder. I.E Your wife & kids.
