Paying $300 for New Home NBN Connection

Hi all,

I wanted to know the rarity/normality of paying $300 for New Home NBN connection with Optus AND if so, is there way around it?

Have recently moved into a off the plan apartment in the Western Suburbs where the NBN connection has been set up and a "white box" was provided. I assumed this was the NBN box and nothing further was required.

During my phone call with Optus, I asked if that was enough and please let me know if there was going to be a charge and nonetheless, I have been charged $300.

My question, is this the correct process and costs? If so, is there any way around it.

Thanks in advance for your help!

:)

I am with Optus too in a similar situation as you. SO called up and negotiated a deal with them prior to upgrading from cable to nbn which essentially waived the $300. They are coming to install nbn at the new house tomorrow, will update you whether we will be charged.

  • I too have been looking at the NBN from Telstra.

It seems they too charge $300 for "new developments" From [their website[(https://www.telstra.com.au/broadband/nbn/nbn-bundles)

"If you're in a new development and not already connected to the nbn™ network, a $300 nbn co New Development Charge may also apply."

  • Yes don't know any that don't charge it:-

As outlined in the new Telecommunications Infrastructure in New Developments Policy, nbn is required to charge the retail service provider (RSP) a one-time user contribution of $300 (inc. GST). Under nbn’s Wholesale Broadband Agreement for RSPs, this is referred to as the “new developments charge” and came into effect on 2nd April 2016. nbn applies this charge to the RSP that, on and from this date, submits the first order for an nbn™ broadband service to complete at a location in a new development. It is up to your RSP to on-charge this amount at their discretion.

  • What, exactly, is the $300 charge for? where is this NBN box located at ?

    • Setting up NBN in the new development.

The NBN box is located inside our apartment, inside a cupboard to be precise.

      • So the NBN cabling is already terminated in your apartment.
All you need is a router and line activation. Plug in and you're set. Save $300.

        • I wish Optus understood that and could explain that process.

Okay will give it a go (unfamiliar with the process)

          Thanks :)
