Looking for a deal on a good quality 7-inch Android tablet

I recently cracked the screen on my first gen Nexus 7 2012 tablet. I'm completely overwhelmed by all the new tablet choices when it comes to a replacement.

Needs/wants:
- 7 inch screen is fine I have no need for anything bigger
- Internal storage is not a big deal but micro sd slot is a must
- I don't want a cheap and nasty $89 tablet, the thing I loved the most about my old nexus was that it felt like a high quality tablet, if that makes sense. I don't want some cheap flimsy thing. My kids have a laser $50 tablet from dick smith and you can tell it's crap just by holding it.
- Wifi only is fine, 3g not necessary

My price range is about $200? That seems like a reasonable amount to spend?
The Samsung Galaxy Tab A 7" seems alright, it is $197 at JB. Obviously a bargain/cheapest price would be best!

Thanks!

Try a chinese imported tablet. Chuwi / Teclast are quite good nowadays and is a well known tablet maker (at least, for those who are internet savvy)

    • But that's 8" tablet? not 7" as per what OP wants?

tablet makers gave up on the 7" category because nobody really buys 7" tablets anymore.
Rack your mind a little. Can you think of any 7" tabs that are high end, flagship-specced, with an Octo-core processor, 2-3 gigs of RAM, 16gigs of storage, full hd display and good battery life?

Probably not, because the market has shrunk considerably. The 7" tabs you get from Officeworks, JB Hifi and other brick/mortar shops here are budget tabs <$200 which are all very basic, and their processors are much lower end than a 8" device.

Sales on tablets have dropped by almost 44% in the last few years. The biggest hit was to smaller tabs in the 7" category.
They became less and less popular while we ushered in an age of big-screen mobile phones in the 5 to 6 inch range. So what use was a 7" tab when there are phones like Galaxy Notes, Xiaomi Mi Max's (this behemoth is 6.44 inches for god's sake), Galaxy Mega, Lenovo Phab etcetera.

Larger tabs that seem to mimic full-fledged PC's continue to do well. We're talking tablets like Ms Surface, Dell Venue Pro, and other tablets and two-in-ones that run Windows.

There's still some 7" tabs which are available online:

        1. Huawei Honor X2 (this is actually sold as a 7" phone)
        2. Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 7-inch (this is from 2014, it's almost three years old now)
        3. ASUS ZENPAD Z170C — american markets only, so you'd need to go Amazon
        4. LG G Pad 7.0 — not sold in Au, but available online and from Korea
        5. and well, the Nexus 7, still sold by some but definitely too old and outdated now.

TLDR all the good premium tablets are 8 inches now!!

        • Thanks for the list;

I have 8" tablet; I found the tablet too big to be held on single hand (note: I have medium size palm).

Thus the reason I'm interested to see what other 7" tablet in the market these days…

I have the Samsung Galaxy Tab A 7" lite 8GB(slightly smaller and smaller battery (life), only 1 GB memory compared to 1.5 GB, 2mp for camera vs 5mp of of non lite version)and I love it!!! rrp 120.00 USD for lite vs 150.00 USD for non lite at the Samsung store.

It is the perfect size to put in my handbag and to hold with one hand and not so small that I cannot read books using it or type on it.

I installed kindle on it and it is perfect for reading. I mostly use it for reading books, email and the internet. But I have been known to play Yahtzee, and slots on it too.

I do find that sometimes using a rubber stylus is easier for exact choices using the touch screen but I can get by without it.

I expect it is the perfect 7" tablet you could ever want and possibly the least expensive tablet of its size.

    • Hm…with only 1GB memory, would it be slow?

      • for what I use it for it is quick enough. I do not see any lag that is obvious when using it.

  • teclast 8 inch, should be $100 usd or less

but remember on windows, it will lag on 2g ram

I have 8" unisurf from Harvey Norman, from memory I paid $70 (with stack discounts). The worst decision ever in life.

The tablet is unusable…very slow and lag and not responsive…
