I'm Going to Shenzhen. Any Tips?

I'm going to China for a wedding and I'll be making a quick visit (3 days) to Shenzhen. Any tips on which of the markets I should visit? I'm really only interested in electronics. Although thanks to OzBargain I'm not in any need of anything anymore. I'm reallhy only there for a stickybeak.

I might make a visit to the DJI uber store there. And maybe try to get some extra kit for my (on order) Mavic pro… I'll probably get a handful of 18650 batteries while I'm there considering the issues with having them mailed. But not really sure what else to get.

Worth noting I don't speak Madanrin or Cantonese. So I know I'll get ripped off.

With that in mind. Is there anything the OzBargain commuinty really wants in bulk. (Please don't say Eneloops.)

  • The largest electronics market in Shenzhen is called "Hua Qiang Bei". Look for uni students, they should be able to help you out :)

Always take care of your belongings. Never leave them unattended (even for a few mins). Many professional thieves there. My dad already got his laptop stolen.

  • Look at taobao with Google translate to get a rough idea on price

    • Taobao is usually cheaper than retail price in store. Plus the merchant can potentially sell the product RMB$100 more just because he's a foreigner. That's how they work. Remember to bargain for prices and it usually works.

  • Good luck with getting parts for the Mavic, all news pretty much points there there not actually being much around.

    • Parts would be a nice to have. But at this stage I don't need them.

  • You could put a mobile phone together and have it on the market in under 30 minutes.

  • There is a 10000mAh power bank limit at Beijing airport going through customs. They have a bin full of power banks that exceed the limit.

Checkout Huaqiangbei and SEG Electronics Market if you can. Aliexpress and Taobao are tiny in comparison. It can get very tight and crowded in some places though.

    • Thanks. I'm flying through Shanghai. I'll double check this airport as well. Although I don't have batteries larger than 10AH…

      • You'll be all good then. Aussie customs are fine and don't normally care when carried through hand luggage. Chinese customs can be more strict.

I've always found shenzhen is better for the bulk buy. It is very hit and miss with the language some speak English, broken english. I have always found it easier to negotiate in hong kong though, pricing between both shenzhen and hong kong are pretty similar in my opinion depending how well you can negotiate, regardless what ever you buy will be cheaper there than in oz except for baby formula.

Chocolate is also more expensive than oz as is nutella.

        • Righto. So stock up on Weetbix and Chocolates…

When I was in Shenzhen I went to window of the world. Was amusing.

    Never eat yellow snow

  • Carry a witnessed photocopy of your passport I.D. page. Leave the real one somewhere real safe.
DO carry it. Watch out for pickpockets, prostitutes and shonky sales people wandering around (not in a store) Don't buy DVD's, Blueray or any recorded material, always crap copies. Bargain all purchases, walk away will always result in a reduction. Learn how to read a calculator, use one for pricing.
Always be polite, do not argue with police. Carry that passport copy. Do not spit. Watch out for prostitutes, there's plenty of them, always bargain, etc…

  • Any tips?

    Don't cross the roads.

If you are in a car, put your seatbelt on even if no one else does.

Careful where you eat/what you eat.

    Dont get in a fight.

Watch out for pick-pockets. They are active, skilful and likely to target foreigners.
Be careful on the roads, they are poorly designed and the drivers are dangerous.
Don't get drunk, don't take drugs, don't stir up the locals. You'd be asking for trouble.
Enjoy an interesting, but polluted and overcrowded city
