Did you attend Tafe / college / uni after high school? What did you study?

Hi everyone :)

I'm sort of approaching mid 20's and am starting full time at uni next year in something I think I'm really interested in (criminology, security stuff) I'm graduating from a 3 year tafe course in a few weeks but have realized it's not what I want to do for a living. ive done other tafe courses and worked full time after I finished high school but I'm curious about what other people did after high school, did you get a full time job? Go to tafe/uni? What did you study? Apprenticeship? Nothing? (I did that for a while too)
Thank you for your time ;P

You should start an open poll maybe?

Myself personally: Finished school at 17 (QLD), uni for four years (Bach Ed), now I'm a Chemistry and Bio teacher! I'm now 26 and have five years experience under my belt.

Study what you love and you'll never have to work a day in your life. Unemployment.

      It's funny because it's true.

Don't love your work, instead get work that pays really well.
Love other things that money buys like; cars, games, activities, homes, travelling, women, and OzBargain deals.

  • I studied English at uni when I finished high school. Probably should have done IT or accounting, however I love English! Plus, it comes in handy when I have to write e-mails in my course of work hahahaha

  • Did VET courses and other IT certifications in high school. Went straight into IT/engineering at Uni and during my study I scored full time work.

I went straight from college to university and did a combined bachelor of arts (criminology major, psychology minor) and law. Really versatile degree!

      What are you working as?

    • I'll be entering practice as a lawyer (in my final year at present), however I've got friends in child protection, public service, law, intelligence etc from the degree. The skills you learn are widely applicable.

  • Worked a minumum wage job for 1 year before landing my electrical apprenticeship. Finished last year and am staying on for the long haul. Decent pay. Great conditions. I'm 25

    All the best, mate

About to graduate uni (21). Scored a investment analyst grad role at westpac. About to drop 80k on a high yeilding investment car.😆

    • You forgot to mention your girlfriend!

    • Haha I read that discussion the other day. Seriously wouldn't want to back with westpac now.

  • The truth be known, attewnded Uni/college/tafe BEFORE High School, actually before kindergarten.

    Next question …😀

    • Should I rephrase the question for you?

      • No thanks, I am not educated enough….😀

  • school—>tafe(accounting, also electronics, also programming- enjoyed learning) for 2 years, 6 months off with F/T work, Uni -B.A., postgrad, moved overseas for a few years, back to Aus—> grad dip, post grad dip (finishing next week).

    • Wow, that's impressive

      • it's been over quite a few years. I've only been very part time studying since returning to Aus.

  • Went to uni and did a bachelor's for 3 years, worked a casual retail job during that time. Graduated, got credit from said bachelor's so went back and did another 2 years part-time uni. Failed my final assessment because I went travelling, travelled excessively for the next 2 years while working at said retail job. Got promoted to a management position at retail job, so worked full time and studied a cert IV at TAFE part time, finishing up next month.

TLDR; 5 years in uni and still work in retail.

    • If you enjoy working in retail, it doesn't matter how many years you are in uni for. Perhaps your uni degree helps you promote to senior posts faster in the industry?!

Went to uni for 8 years.
    Two degrees later.

    Never again.

Went to a bridging course after high school then uni. Currently studying law, socio-legal studies and sociology (struggle a lot). No work yet. Still a few years more to go to graduate (God!) ….

  • Went to university after high school. Dropped out after 6 months and took on a web development role at an agency. Took on another web development role to do part time and do university at the same time. Got about a year and a half left of university. Thinking of switching to an online university course or an university that does most of their courses during the night/weekends, so I could do full time work again.

Don't know how my life ended up this way, but I digress… High school -> uni (studied a double degree in business and arts) -> big 4 accounting firm and started my CA -> big 4 commercial bank. About to finish my CA in the next half a year. It's up to you whether you want to chase the gold or chase your dreams…

  • Just wondering if anyone has done an online only TAFE course? I'm looking at doing one as I'm a shift worker & cannot commit to attending classes at a designated location at specified times.

  • Left school
Got a job repairing office equipment with a cert II in electrotechnology at the Campus in West Ryde just around the corner

Still doing the same thing these days although I took a 3 year break to do help desk with an IT company and would advise people never to bother, pay was crap hours were long and they had a high staff turnover like you couldn't believe which meant tickets never got resolved and customers would be angry

I now AM back to fixing office equipment for a canon dealer in Brisbane and never been happier
Company car, fuel paid for, relaxing environment, get to drive around all day to new places and meet new people
Better pay and now getting into software solutions and support which means I have pathways compared to my last dead end job

  • Graduated high school. Went to uni studying a Bachelor of Science majoring in maths and stats. Found a job a few months later at a small-ish marketing/advertising place and I've been working for the past 4 months. I'm at work right now waiting for things to do.

Enjoyed maths (more than anything else) in high school so I thought I'd go with that in uni. Have to say I can't be mad with the way things turned out especially since I thought I'd end up a drug dealer or something hahahaha.

  • Straight to uni after high school, Commerce kid majoring in Accounting, got a grad role at an accounting firm and have been working since (recently commenced my third year).
