What to Do with Jemena Not Allowing Gas Metre Self Read Anymore?

Dear All,

My gas bill has been charged based on "estimates" for a few months, since Jemena (AGL gas) stopped allowing for self-metre read. And the fact that their reader come where everyone is out working and never notify beforehand.

**I live in an apartment where individual metre is located within their units…

What would you suggest? any chances of getting my metre read based on real usage any more?

Thanks

  • My gas line is maintained by Jemena Gas too.

In august, this was what my bill said.

Are you saying they'll be estimating my bill from now on?

    • Yours is based on actual meter reading, look at the first column which says "Actual". It would say "estimate" or something it its based on estimation.

Your retailer will eventually contact you directly to arrange a physical read. Alternatively you can also contact and arrange a read. You can try to offer to take a photo of the meter with that days newspaper and send it in.

Try to find out the reason the meter can't be read.
If it's simply behind something, obscured or not obviously accessible you can notify your retailer and they will pass on instructions to Jemena on how to access the gas meter.
It sounds like the meter is behind a locked gate or something in your case.
They usually give you a time window when the meter will be read.

Eventually you will find that your bills will be recalculated based on your actual usage anyway.
I used to work in the industry, hope that helps to

    • Indeed what is you said is correct. There must be some "no read" code is something which says why they can't read meters. If OP rings his/her retailer, they should be able to check why they can't read meter.

      • very well said, the metre is in my unit (apartment block)

        what do I do?

    • thank you Cheapsize!

And you will also find that retailers will not - or rather certain customers will. This happens when readers are are allowed to be read at any time already so this is a great move for this business and should lead to much more revenue coming in from vulnerable customers such as the elderly.

Aren't the criminal pigs we vote in doing a great job at allowing the wealthy to (profanity) over everyone else.

  • The meter isn't under your kitchen sink right?

    • exactly…
