Prospective Juror Notice - Failed to Send Reply; Fines/Penalties

Hi All,

A few weeks ago i received a notice for prospective juror. Anyway, i put it aside and completely forgot about it till today. I was horrified when i read the form and saw that if it isn't submitted, it says you can be fined $1000 and get 2 months' imprisonment. I assume this never happens but nevertheless it scared the piss out of me.

It says the following:

If you do not fill out this form truthfully—before the date listed on your Notice to prospective juror—you will be guilty of an offence and we can fine you $1,000 or imprison you for 2 months.

I simply completely forgot about it (had a lot of other things going on).

So my question is, what should i do now, fill in the form and submit it late, or just don't submit anything? Maybe say i never received it or lost it ? Does anyone have any experience in this or recommendations? Any help greatly appreciated!

Cheers

Edit: I'm in QLD

Say you never received it. Aus post loose things all the time

  • Submit it late.

If they do a follow up, then just say you never received the first notice.

    • There's only ever been one notice and it was due 2 weeks ago. I could submit it late with a letter saying i just forgot and apologising and saying i am available if required though? (The date for duty is 21 November so still a couple weeks away). I think that might be the best bet but not sure.. scared :(

      • Just mail it.

They're not going to make your life miserable. Sometimes I receive these and I give Jury Service NSW a call to excuse myself from jury duty (I work in the medical field) and the ladies on the other end are usually really nice.

  • I could submit it late with a letter saying i just forgot and apologising

don't do that. just fill the form and mail it. if they ask why they received it late. say you don't know, ask the carrier.

  • I never received my first notice as summons for jury duty.

Got sent a similar letter you could get fined… jail time.. so i simply told them i never received it.

They sent another letter giving me another date for jury duty.

Attended that and never heard from them again after serving as a juror.

  • and get 2 months' imprisonment. I assume this never happens but nevertheless it scared the piss out of me.

I'm sure you'll be fine. 2 months' imprisonment is nothing. :P

you will be guilty of an offence and we can fine you $1,000 or imprison you for 2 months.

They have those options, but as with most government fines, it's just to keep you honest, similar to your tax return, census, voting, etc. BUT having said that, don't hold me to it! Usually honesty is best, and I'm sure you're not the first and won't be the last to forget.

    I'd just ignore it.

    Also

and we can fine you $1,000 or imprison you for 2 months.

"We" doesn't sound very professional to me … are you sure it's a real notice?

  • or just do it online if it hasn't passed the due date

  • Couldn't you just call them up and tell them that it only came in the mail today (plz someone correct me if thats bad advice)? Say you only just received it but the due date almost seems up so you thought you'd call them right away?

Surely they can't expect everyone to reply back straight away. What if you go away on vacation for a few months, or you visit family at a different state for an extended period of time.

    • Did just that. Told them never received the original notice. The person i spoke to was nice. They sent me another notice to attend.

      • was this after u received a fine, and what state?

Nsw. Received a notice telling me im going to get fined for not turning up. Told them never received the first notice. I got sent another notice with double the figure in fine if i dont attend this time around.

  • say u never received that one too. One day they'll give up

    • And if it gets to the point where the state sheriff personally delivers the letter to you then what? Not saying it will happen just saying it might.

If the aim is getting out of jury duty. Its a day off work. You get paid for that day and you get an allowance from the state also.

Last i checked only medical and emergency services are exempted from serving jury duty.
