I bought Nikon D3300 from OW's deal posted here late last year (price-matched from TGG) and I only took it out once and didn't touch it ever since. And that's just one of the other stuff all over my apartment that I haven't used after I bought them. OzBargain is really a bad place for individuals who can't resist impulse-buying. lol

If you really want a start in photography buy a 700D instead, or go with a Nikon D5x00 series. A bit more coin for a much more versatile camera. If you don't think you'll ever push it beyond snapshots and are just looking for some extra IQ this camera might be okay.

    • what about nikon d3200 for a starter?

    • Thanks for the heads up! my sister is looking for an entry level camera to do some photography and travel with etc, and I was going to link her to this camera as a suggestion, but I'll let her know of the suggestions you gave! Any other recommendations? Price isn't an issue for her, but I'm pretty sure she is looking at $500-1000 budget.

      • I am not a pro. But I like 100D and will recommend it to girls. It's the lightest one of Canon DSLRs. DSLR means nothing until you wanna bring it with you. Hope your sis's new cam will not end up staying in its box like my friend's :P

        • That is true. If you're not willing to carry around a DSLR you're better off to save your cash. But for many kinds of photography there is no substitute. Which is why pros still use them. You won't see many pros carrying nothing but a single mirrorless camera and no accessories.

      • Maybe consider a mirror less fuji. everyone seems To love them. my dslr bag weighs more than 10kg fully loaded, which get old pretty quickly.

I would start no lower than D5300 or D5500 on Nikon.
I would start no lower than 700D if going Canon.

My first DSLR was a Nikon D70. I then progressed to D90 and then D7100/D7200. I always skip a generation and buy the high end consumer cameras. Those are usually outside of that $1000 limit, especially with accessories. Although I did pick up a D7100 for $850 with a $150 cash back from JB Hi Fi a couple of Christmases ago.

I also own Canon 600D and 700D from a couple of years ago when I was able to get them quite cheap but if I were getting serious with Canon I'd have the 70D or 80D. It's not quite a fair comparison because the 700D is older but I'd still pick Nikon for still photography. The older Canons do better video than the older Nikons but Canon hasn't been doing as well with video - people say it's because they're trying to sell their very expensive video offerings and these cameras had started eating into that market.
