Got a 40% discount on Dundee IPA at DM with 1month left 08/12/2016. BUT USA dates are month first so its actually 3 month beyond

1 beer in and it tastes fine so far, at least i think it does. I've never tasted this beer before. Should I take it back and try and get the same IPA again with dates not beyond best before at the same price? Or keep drinking because it's probably all still going to be good? I don't want to drink too many if i try to get a refund, is there a cut off limit amount for drinking them before you can take them back?

RRP is $55. If it tastes good and its $33, probably should just count my lucky chickens? Though getting a return with decent best before dates in the future AT the same $33 price would be the best solution.

What are peoples experiences with american ipa's 3m after best before? still good?

Sorry if this is meant to be in the food section, thought it was also a 'bargain' discussion.

Mmm beer.

    This is a bit of a non-issue.
Beer will literally last forever in a sealed bottle with no chance of becoming harmful, so there is no food safety issue.
It can become light struck if improperly stored, but that occurs irrelevant of best before dates.
Some dry hopped beers might suffer declining aroma and mellower bitterness as they age, but it doesn't happen the day after the best before date (or the month after).
I happily drink beer as long as it lasts at my place, even if it is a few months out of date.
You already got 40% off for the date, so either get a refund and pay full price for in date, or enjoy your cheap beer, but trying for an exchange for in date is a bit brazen.

    • It would have been brazen if it was posted on any other forum ;) Brazen is getting the red rooster bday meal over and over and over or smashing a deal so others miss out. Just wanted to see if they'd still give me the discount on regular pre-best before beer, cause driving around returning things is slightly annoying.

      Thanks for the info.

It does depend on the beer too. The higher the alcohol content the better. You can cellar heavy beers for years. Also bottle conditioned beers (with the yeast at the bottom of the bottles like Coopers, Chimay). The Dundee at 6.3% I expect would be good next year. A lot of beers like these have "Best After Date", and no best before. Probably just like wine.

Lagers and beers in light or clear bottles though I'd avoid much beyond BBD.

I'm probably the wrong person to ask. I'll eat any packaged food in the pantry, and not check dates. If I open it and it is off, then I know… I'm not one of these people that thinks tomato sauce or tinned stew or marmalade suddenly self destructs on a date… If I open it and the contents let out gas, then I'd toss it…

        • Sounds right on the money though, tasted another and it's fine. Very carbonated and has a nice deep bitter taste, probably just as the brewers intended. I posted this as I didn't want to 'try out' too many before a refund was possible. Quite a nice beer and @ 6.3% you're getting 42sd from 24 beers, Quite cheap pricing for an IPA at $55. At $33 I think any slight blemish is still very worth drinking. If it was massively disgusting I would be refunding it. I'm also realising that unless it smells funky, it's still good to consume re best before/expiry dates.

On this discount topic, its probably worth searching through Dan Murphy slabs to find a date you can get discounted. The manager was only too happy to give me 40% off with 1 month pending. Love a good store that is customer friendly.

          @johndemonik:

You are very lucky. LAst time I tried that was last years Little Creatures Return of the Dread stout. I was waiting for it to drop when it got to or beyond the "BBD". When I pointed it out in store, they pulled them from the shelf and wouldn't sell it to me… And believe me, that beer is fine. I have one left at home. I had two, and drank the second last one last month, a year after "expiry" and it was fine. I might drink the last one today, to celebrate International Stout Day.

Generally speaking now I'll only buy a beer under 6% if I'm intending on drinking it pretty damn quick… I've gotten hooked on Imperial stouts. I just wish they were easier to get instore…

It's also funnny (to me) that people worry about BBD, but will drink Corona in clear glass bottles. I mean that stuff is nearly universally skunked. That is what the lime is for, to mask the smell. I actually wonder if Corona in cans tastes and smells OK?

        • @Mobe1969:

I'm lucky that the store assistant manager didn't realise my dundee ipa were 3 months beyond best before with the ambiguous american dating system. I asked him about the "10/2016" Pintail Pale Ales and he took them off the shelf and said they couldn't sell them.

Not much of a stout fan aside from guiness, do you like Porter? Zywiec Porter is pretty delicious and at $90 a slab, you're getting a 15 standard drinks for a 6pack at $22.50 9.5%alc. Pretty good value if you only have 1 or 2 a night and has that creamy bitter stout characteristic

        • @johndemonik:

Yeah I love Zywiec Porter. My goto commercial beer. I really feel it is dark enough to be classified as a stout though. It is the only Imperial/Baltic Porter I've tried though. It's stronger and as dark as any regular stout I've tried, and as strong and dark as several imperial stouts I've had, but not as strong as others. Or maybe a lot of the imperial stouts I've had are really Baltic Porters. Looking online I think the difference is the Baltic Porters are supposed to be less bitter, more sweet,a and the Imperial Stouts more bitter…
