Cheapest new generation graphics card?

I'm looking for a new graphics card. I've heard that 14nm/16nm graphics cards are the newer generation - are they worth getting and which one is the cheapest? I can also wait - should I wait a while?

Thanks guys.

If nvidia, get the gtx 1060 3GB. $280 with the bay sale on now.

What are you looking to buy a graphics card for (to play one particular game? to play all the latest games? to see what this gaming thing is all about?) and what resolution is the computer monitor that you want to use it on?

    • I currently have an i7-330 and 6gb of ram, paired with an ATI HD5770. Pretty old stuff. I'm pretty sure the graphics card is the bottleneck (am I right?). It's noisy, gets terrible fps on the latest games (I had to play DX:MD on 1280x720 on the lowest settings) and I can't view 1080p at 60fps on my computer, even with a fresh install of win10 with nothing installed but the latest drivers. I've tried overclocking, but even 5MHz of overclocking causes flickering and distortion. I have two 1920x1080 monitors, one 60Hz, one 144Hz.

I generally only play really old games so I've been happy to put it off, but I've heard the newest generation of graphics cards have a much lower power drawdown, meaning less noise and heat, and I guess there's the bonus of better fps and less lag too.

      • i7-330

        you mean i7 920?

        • i7-930 sorry

  • I think the best cards for the money right now is the 1060 6Gb, RX470/480 4/8Gb… eventually the 1050 4Gb might be a good buy.

if you gonna play only at 1080p go for the rx 470 4gb non reference, sapphire nitro or msi. If your not in a hurry Amazon is the cheapest by far.

  • Cheapest isn't always a good bet, the performance:$ nosedives below a certain price point. IMO if you're just sticking to 1080, I'll agree with the others and say either GTX1050 or RX470

    • GTX 1050 isn't on sale though, so the best card for under the $300 price tag is the GTX 1060 (3GB crippled version)

considering the GTX 1060 (1152 Cores) has almost twice the number of CUDA cores than the GTX 1050 (640 coreS), the 1050 for $209 dollars doesn't sound like the sweet spot.
