I've signed up for free 6 month hosting. If I'm a TA on hosting, how time consuming is it to switch hosting providers for a wordpress website and will it affect how google and other search engines see my site?

For a period of time (when DNS update is propagated) you should have your site running on both hosts. Then it should not have much issue.
However if you do care about the Google ranking, that means you do have substantial traffic that's meaningful to you. Then maybe the priority should be finding a stable hosting provider rather than switching to the next free one every 6 months.
