  • what is this?

    • +2

It appears to be a USB drive with dual USB-C and 3.1 connections

  • +1

Thanks! I ordered a new Macbook Pro this other day! This will tide me over the next month of waiting :)

  • is that same as OTG ?

    • +2

Yes, if your device has a USB Type-C port and supports USB OTG (which should be pretty much all USB Type-C devices) then this will work.

      • Perfect for those with a MS 950 or 950 XL

        • +1

          Or new pixel.

I actually have the older Sandisk Dual USB 3.0 and got a generic adaptor for micro to USB type c. Works like a charm on my lumia 950 xl

        • @harkoliar: Is the adaptor connection stable?

        • @Online Bathroomware: yeah seems to be. Transferred 2.5 GB worth of photos and videos from my lumia 950 to USB stick then to nexus 7. Faster than WiFi or bluetooth.

          Edit. Got this one. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/162134763962?_trksid=p2057872.m27…

Also on another note, it was unstable with the San disk WiFi connect. I think because it was drawing extra power with the WiFi feature I think.

        • @harkoliar: Or a Note 7… or not…

  • Mixed review at Amazon in relation to the usb type-c drive. One even states it has a microsd inside, which tend to have shorter longevity.

  • Does Sandisk do 256GB?

  • Any benchmarks? this decent speed wise?

  • -2

Why do they keep changing USB ports. There is hardly any size difference between mini, micro, type c. I think this is the way tech industry makes us buy more.

    • +1

usb type c is a lot faster and you dont have to insert it only one way, very convenient

      • -2

I know it is faster. SATA got faster without changing the interface. Backward compatibility is extremely convenient.

        • +6

USB type C is the unification of all USB interfaces now and in the future.

Not only is it reversible, it’s a single USB connector shape all devices should adopt. No more messes of different USB cables with different connector shapes for all the various devices you want, and no more massive ports taking up an unnecessary amount of room on ever-thinner devices. It also lets you charge devices bi-directionally, meaning your device can either output 100 watts or draw in 100 watts.

        • +1

How often are you unplugging / replugging your SATA devices though?…

        • @scrimshaw: Why couldnt they just make a faster protocol that uses the same micro usb connector? Can you imagune how many millions of tons of micro usb cables will end up in landfill?

        • @zealmax:

faster protocol that uses the same micro usb connector?

They did. It's micro USB with USB 3.0, it's basically the same connector with USB3.0 speeds.

But going forward, we're going to need the same port for all these things

          • Data
          • Charging
          • Video output
          • and more

so USB Type C allows for that. Micro USB is probably not going to become extinct anytime soon. I believe lower end devices will continue to use MicroUSB, but even then Type C is far superior with it's capability to fast charge and reversible plug form factor.

Also, USB Type C is just a new connector type and it's also backwards compatible with older Micro USB devices, you just need a dongle to convert. It still uses the same old USB specification… I don't see what the hoohaa is?

        • @scrimshaw:

          Well explained, thank you.

      • Also it can do multiple things at the same time, I.e. transfer data and video and charge your phone at the same time.

      • -1

        3.1 is just as fast.

      • +3

        Type C is neither faster / slower… it's the connection standard (not an indicator of speed)… you can get USB2.0 / USB3.0 / USB3.1 Type C devices / cables.

        • -3

This is what I mean. Why keep changing the connector? Someone is making money out there. Fan boys like scrimshaw have already been brain washed and spruiking the new connector type.

        • +1

@zealmax: I get that it can be annoying… the changing of connectors usually comes down to a combination of
          a) trying to save space within a device
          b) usability benefits; like not having to worry about the plugs orientation
          c) lower parts / construction cost (using less plastic / metal etc)
          d) physical / electrical / electronic limitations; Type-C has 2 sets of 12 pins… original USB had 4 pins.. that's a HUGE limitation nowadays.

        • @kudoz: 6 x more pins. Didn't know that. I just hope there will not be a Type-D anytime soon.

    • I've been using horse and cart for years and it still works fine. Now they are telling me to buy this "Bus" thing?
I think this is the way transport industry makes us buy more.

Damn illuminati and their planned obsolescence!

  • +1

Argh darn, should've waited since I got mine at $55 :/

Oh well, that's what I get for not waiting 20% off on eBay
