Good for Australia in the coming year, at least we can get faster internet in the future.

  • I read that as well. And it took them 12 whole months to negotiate…

"NBN Co will have access to Telstra’s network of pits, ducts and wires."
I wonder if that means Telstra's mobile 3G coverage as well?

If so that could mean much better wireless for mobiles in the future too.
    I'm sick of Optus's slow 3G.

    • what i read on the other news, gov will give telstra more frequency after analog tv phase out. so most likely telstra will dominant in wireless business, this is to compensate their lost of income on the land line / cooper line business.

    • Leonheart1 - are you serious??? You have to be joking!!!

viz - "I wonder if that means Telstra’s mobile 3G coverage as well?"

Gee I dont like Pepsi. I hope that they can have access to the coca cola receipe!!!

The only reason why the Optus 3G network is slow is that they have oversold the capacity. They are a cheapass company that wants a free ride, and when they can't get it they wont put money into it. Giving them access to Telstra network will just mean they will oversell that as well. They dont need Telstra's network, a simple investment in theirs will do it. But Telstra costs more!!… Yep get what you pay for….

As for NBN being a solution, its going to take 8 years for everyone people to see any benefit, and if they are stuck on ADSL1 good luck, as no one will provide ADSL2 because the NBN is "coming".

      • i guess, some isp start selling fibre broadband mate, i know this is overprice, but if you are really need the speed, here is the plan
        http://www.iinet.net.au/fibre/plans.html

i agree with you ozpete about telstra selling premium product, but unfortunately, they don't train their cs as premium cs. it is similar you go to bmw car showroom, and the show room employ people that normally selling cheap car. the product is premium, but the service is poor. that is the issue with telstra.

yup, adsl2+ will be gone when this fibre anywhere else. please don't vote liberal, make this nbn completed first then you can vote for liberal. no joke.

yup, adsl2+ will be gone when this fibre anywhere else. please don’t vote liberal, make this nbn completed first then you can vote for liberal. no joke

Well sorry but life has more to it than 100Mb broadband. And we have no idea what the price will be. Not just for the broadband but for the power that runs the computer etc.

These guys cant even build a classroom at anywhere near a reasonable cost, so how the hell do we think they will bring in 100mb broadband anywhere near a cost without bankrupting the nation.

Those free movies we can enjoy with broadband at 100Mb wont be that free after all. And BTW the 8 years to deliver this is their estimate, and they have always promised more than they can deliver.

MEANWHILE many here will be stuck with broadband at ADSL speed, while a those who at least have ADSL2 get the faster speed again. Is that fair???

I'll vote (which might be Labor) and I hope everyone else does, based on more important things in life that faster games and free movies. And in 8 years time technology will have changed dramatically so 100mb would have probably got their via wireless or even copper.

With Telstra giving up the copper, the govt will own the infastructure, and you know the greatest issues with Telstra was when it was the government run Telecom, where work practices created the attitudes that have taken all this time to slowly weed out of Telstra. The same practices you mention about their CS.

If you dont believe me look up COTS - Casualties of Telstra, nearly all were victims under originally Telecom

          • @[Deactivated]: agree, i guess australia might need to hire Lee Kuan Yew - ex Singapore prime minister. Learn from him how to run a country as he is running a company. couple months back, i have travelled to singapore, hk and china. internet is cheap, especially in singapore, you got free wireless internet on many hot spot.

and i heard indonesia gov also do tendering their fibre ring, so their archipelago can be connected by internet.

liberal already in power for many years, they are only talking and tony abbott has pledge that he will remove nbn budget when he is in the power. seriously, we a need a leader that can make a decision to invest in the infrastructure.

            • @dragonrabit: No thanks. I certainly won't want someone like that to run the country. His family still controls all the profitable business in Singapore and not to mention they censors the internet over there.

And Look at the size of Australia compare to Singapore. Totally different demographic. The cost of lying out a network in Australia is much more expensive and complicated. And although Singapore have unlimited downloads, their connection speeds are poor.

and I agree with Ozpete. Optus is overselling their network, as they are doing with TPG too. Cheap and more downloads does not mean better service. Sadly they will get more customers and force out smaller competitors with their campaign but at the end of the day, the overall network service will be worse off unless they put in more investments.

              • @ash: are u referring china or singapore? i never heard singapore cencors their internet.

                • @dragonrabit: Singapore. its well known. Their government pretty much has absolute say over everything and anything, that's why the same party has ruled for decades.

ps. my comments will probably get censored too. ha

                  • @ash: don't think so they cencors their internet. i went to singapore this year,i can visit any website. i went to china last year, yes got cencors
                    on certain website.

their connection speed poor? you must be joking. have u been there? when is the last time u visit singapore.

                    • @dragonrabit: hmm…I have several friends in Singapore.. and one of them worked for Starhub - one of only the 2 telcos in Singapore. She told me unless you use internet in weird hours, generally speed is slower than what we are getting here (she now lives in Brissy, using only TPG.) And when I was over there (3 times in the past 5 years) I didn't bother using internet.. was there for holiday. But my friends were surprised at the speed I was getting (12Mbps on iinet ADSL2) compare to his, unlimited, but slow internet… congestion is the problem, not the plans companies advertise. If you were using the net for casual browsing its probably okay, but for pure download speeds its poor.

And yes they do censor their internet, you should google, censorship has many levels. China probably is the worst, but singapore certainly do censor what their citizens can read or download.

                      • @ash: u need to have first hand experience, not just listen by someone. i got many friend who still working in IT there and
i have been there many times. none of them complaining about internet connection. and none of them talking
about internet cencorship there. tell me, what singapore government do cencors on the content?
                        porn? or what?
singapore has covered by fiber and wireless connection now.
i got constant connection 2Mbps on their free wireless.

i guess your friend lived there many years ago, and u still remember the old stories.

singapore got more than 2 telco companies, singtel, starhub and m8 + other small companies

                        • @dragonrabit: Just google singapore internet censorship mate..

Yes i stand correct . i meant to say 2 of the major telcos in SG in Starhub and singtel.

And you still don't get it……still comparing network in a country like Singapore (693 sq km) to Australia (Sydney metro alone is 12,145 sq km )???

If your statement were made about comparing the USA to Australia, it would have more credibility.

                          • @ash: i am talking with their fibre connection and fast wireless connection. they got faster internet connection than australia.
i am not comparing the size of the country.

u know in singapore, u can't buy porn magazine, but you can browsing porn website there.
politic, i am talking about singapore politic with my singaporean friend via messanger. so far never get block
so what type of censorship are u referring to? i don't get it.

                            • @dragonrabit: In actuality, Singapore's MDA (media censorship organization) do censor certain sites. Playboy was censored for a period of time. As a Singaporean in Australia, i do generally feel that internet is usually faster here.

            • @dragonrabit: Get real, he will never come over, Singapore is paying him $3 million a year. How much are you willing to pay for him?

        • What do you mean overpriced?? That's what I pay now!
And wow, I've never heard of fibre networks in Australia til now…
Why is it only in Victoria?! Grr!

          • +1

@leonheart1: just check iinet mate, they are start selling fibre broadband. so cable and adsl2+ will gone when nbn roll on the whole country.

check on nbn website, they got the the list of area that will be install this nbn on the first stage.

    • +1

So why stick with them? Go to your Telstra shop and move your number over!

Mobiles will definitely not be covered under this NBN deal. Everyone gets suckered in by Optus' prices, but they're cheap because their network blows goats.

      • Still on the plan!
For at least one more year!
I wish I read some sort of mobile coverage review site beforehand…
        ;-(

  • Yay so we might actually keep some of the NBN money in Australia!

  • I would love to see the Coalition take power with the Independents on the condition that they adopt the NBN. Then at least we'll have a government trying to implement future-capable telecommunications infrastructure at a reasonable cost. Potentially win-win!
