Maintaining useable cables for lightning port devices is an expensive habit. I imagine the total cost for the working life of say an iPhone 5 would be over $100, especially when MFI cert local stock.

Its very hard now to "confirm" if cables are MFi. The list is so long, and the chinese manufacturer names often do not match the "brand". I have seen many cables claim MFi but they were never on the list, and never showed the official MFI logo on the packaging.
