See this video, its a wifi video doorbell
Ooo fancy. Sorry I could be of no help.
I've been doing research on improving the security of my home.
Regarding the Ring doorbell, I've read that the lag makes it difficult to use.
I'd be interested to hear any reviews and personal experience with them.
let me know what other stuff you end up getting cause want to do same, improve security at folks home.
I am speaking from personal experience, as I got burgled in July this year:
From my research so far (including opinions of Ozbargainers and colleagues), it's the security measures in the moment that matter, i.e. security cameras only record what has happened but is useless in stopping the crime from happening.
Think like the burglars:
Open view of the house allows them to scout for potential access points and also monitor the resident's routines.
Blind spots to give them time to break in surreptitiously.
Break in quietly.
Target valuables that are easy to take without raising suspicion when they leave the house, and that are easy to on-sell (gumtree, ebay, etc), such as electronics and jewellery.
Easy to get out quickly.
So with this in mind, you want to look at the following security measures:
Fencing and curtains limit the ability for burglars to monitor whether there is someone in the house, lifx/wemo lights (or similar) set to turn on/off periodically when no one is home, and TV/radio on inside the house.
Dummy cameras (comes with stickers that you can stick on windows to warn people that they are being monitored) and spotlights in the blind spots, and/or big heavy pot plants (with cactus, thorn bush or similar) to occupy the blind spot so that the burglar can't crouch/stand hidden in the blind spot.
House alarm and/or dog(s) to make a loud noise if there is an intrusion.
Store valuables in unconventional places (burglars usually look in the living room and master bedroom for quick access to items, and they'll usually ignore the laundry and bathroom).
Deadbolt locks to prevent the burglars from taking big items out the front/back door, and have padlocks on gates.
If the house LOOKS like it is too much of a risk to break into, the burglars will look elsewhere.
I hope that helps, and of course I am open to suggestions too!
I have one of these doorbells and they are great little devices. You need fast internet though.
Motion detection and cloud recording is great. You need to pay a monthly fee for cloud recording.
Another issue I have found is that they claim the battery will last a year. In reality I might get 3 months if I am lucky and that is with motion detection disabled. Hard wiring the device to mains power will solve this problem.
how fast is your internet speed cause I read the same that there is a bit of lag depending on speed.
my folks are on Telstra cable, which I think is fast but not super fast.
download around 25MB/s
upload only 1-2MB/s
Yeah folks internet speed about the same
inb4 stolen
Aliexpress has a number of wireless WiFi video door bells.
Is hard wiring it completely out of the question? For something like this I'd personally like it wired so I don't have to worry about battery life, interference, etc.
I am sure i can go hard wired, but which one is good?
not too sure. best to search " WiFi video door bells" or similar.
look for the ones that have had lots of orders and then go in and look at feedback - check to see that it is mostly good comments about quality usage, etc.
then look for the same item at the least expensive price (on the item with the good fackback you scroll down the page to "by other sellers" to find the same item).
I might have a gander this afternoon. my parents could do with one of these as well.
I am selling one on ebay for $199 and there are other listings with bidding at less aswell. I just purchased one from ring and they sent 2, when i told them they told me to keep it so I plan to sell it and buy the camera.
$29 at Kogan https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-wireless-digital-doorbell…
