I have had a set of these speakers for about three years and I am still very happy with them. I reckon you would be hard pushed to match the sound without going up to bookshelf speakers. This is the cheapest I've seen them.
When I got them I tried out various sets of speakers, but some of the more expensive brand PC speakers did not have the great frequency response across the range that these have (One Altec Lansing set I tried cut the mid-range out altogether and on "Come Together" by the Beatles you could hardly hear the vocals).
Why are they good? The volume level can pretty much carry music through my whole house and the bass on the sub is adjustable. The small mid/hi range speakers have a master volume and 3.5mm headphone plug, can be wall or desk mounted and fit nicely alongside a monitor. The sub can tuck away under the desk easily. Setup is child's play.
You can also get a 5.1 version of these if you're interested (X530?) - I have experienced the 5.1 version once in a lounge room and it wasn't bad.
These are good little speakers if you've got a stereo sound card and you're moving into college.
