Elon Musk reveals solar roofing tiles that look better than normal shingles and are more durable

Presentation from Elon Musk. He's definitely no Steve Jobs when it comes to speeches, but I think he gets the point across sufficiently. Forget about Apple iPhone or Surface Studio ads, this one cuts to the chase right away with it's practicality and makes you actually want the product.

Roofs made completely out of solar panels that actually look nicer than normal shingles and are also more impact resistant than terracotta.

  • I'd love to transition over to Powerwalls and solar roofs, but the entry cost is so high, it kind of makes no sense for couples or small families. I pay around $350 per quarter for my electricity bill. It will take me at least 10+ years to recoup the minimum cost of $15,000 for those Powerwalls.

    • Your usage might change and you will know what to do.
Your usage isn't the issue, it is the outer suburban McMansions using 40kWh a day that will benefit most from renewables and storage.
In about 2020 the battery prices will be substantially lower, and it will be time for lower usage homes to get there too.

      • True, usage would define demand for these. We finished building in April 2015. I put some thought, pre-planned and spent some money in regards to energy usage and generation. Added anticon, wall insulation along with normal roof insulation, every light source is LED, ceiling fans to every room to minimize the use of Air con, all washing machine/dish washer/dryer are on timer to be used during the day when we generate energy through the 3kW system.

Our previous 3br townhouse used to get close to $500 bills per quarter, saving of $150 while being in a bigger house, I think is a step towards the right direction.

The main thing is storage. Right now energy corps pay us next to nothing to feed, and has charges for having solar system installed. If storage becomes cheaper, people wouldn't mind spending more towards solar energy generation.

Would be interested to see if a developer picks up on this and designs an entire development project with solar tiles/panels for all the houses built and invests in a Tesla powerpack system. So all houses in the development with solar generating tiles/panels feeding to a powerpack, and then that feeds back to all houses or even the street lights. Something along those lines….. I know it will bring in, but Tom is using more power and bla bla..and am sure there can be ways to limit and monitor that.

    • The main draw for these tiles is for new and future homes, not existing ones.

      • I disagree.
This is useful for houses not yet built.
It's also useful for old houses going to be renovated.
And its also useful for new houses that will need renovation in 15+ years.

        It's a long-term goal.
Australia, NZ, Canada, UK, and USA… The Five… these countries are well equipped to pave the way/model for the rest of the world to follow.

We will need petroleum in the future for heavy-duty machinery, aerospace, and factories.
But can harness solar electricity for things like home electronics and ground travel.
Especially important if humans ever strive to be a multi-planet species… a first for life as we conceive it.

        • You're being a bit pedantic. My point was, the main draw is for houses that need new roofs. I.e. mostly new houses. It's not something you just upgrade your current house with. Current solar panels would be more cost effective for existing roofs.

        • @ProspectiveDarkness: Are solar panels even cost effective now that rates have dropped for user putting into the grid?

        • @Diji1: Nope. I kind of pay Origin money to feed them solar, instead of getting rebates :|

        • +1

@shadowarrior: you are doing it wrong.

        • @Diji1: if you plan your usage to suit the peak periods of power consumption to power generation then you will see the benefits, its not going to be a payday per quarter but a significant cut from your electricity bill is the key now.

What i would like to see is a decent solar install feeding into a ups 3 phase for me and have a battery backup system to take some loads off the grid at the shoulder periods and at night the trickle charge system can top the batteries up at the off peak periods.

Bit of a setup but definitely works.

        • @ProspectiveDarkness:

Elon talks/stutters about exactly what you are saying at around the 13:48 mark in the video.

        • @Hotkolbas:
I think what shadowarrior means is their fixed connection fee outweighs the modest earnings from a current feed in tariff. If their grid feed in exceeds what they draw, it is reasonable to ask why they have to pay a connection fee for the privilege.

That was painful to watch. Seriously, could he not get some coaching in public speaking.
The clapping was so forced too.

Love the idea though. Seriously better than what is currently used. far more integrated and seamless.

    • I agree elon sucks at public speaking. Hes got the money to employ a good PR speaker and just focus on making the world a better place instead.

      • Yep, I worship the guy, but he is clearly not a salesman or a public speaker.

      • His ideas, and the products made from these ideas, are unique enough that they practically sell themselves. Space travel, hyperloops and solar panels aren't exactly hard to sell, so long as you have the science and the results to show it off.

I'm not kidding and I'm sure i'll get ridiculed for this, but I'm a huge fan of the guy. Research into this bloke, who by the way, has photographic memory, has shown that the reason he stutters is his mind processes information faster than his mouth can speak.

He's an absolute genius. Brains behind Tesla, PayPal, SpaceX and this.

I don't think the bloke deserves a hard time for his lack of ability to speak well.

    • +1

Definitely not. What this guy is doing its not only ground breaking but motivating and inspiring. Every body has great ideas but for now he is at the forefront of executing it. But that's not too say that there aren't many others also doing the same. From here on out I only see great things happening in our society. Of course there will always be the minor heck or major setbacks but as a community we only have but one way to go and that is back and forth haha lol just jk.. up.

is his mind processes information faster than his mouth can speak.

Wow you mean like everyone else? That sure is impressive!

      • +1

        Except Donald Trump.

      • ….To the point where he stutters a lot.

Sorry I omitted that part of the sentence - I assumed one would have a rational enough mind, to make out the meaning of that sentence given the context.

  • those solar tiles look horrible. for anyone who follows the nba, it's reminiscent of carlos booozer's spray on hair.

maybe they should have waited until they could do curved surfaces like roman tiles.

    • maybe they should have waited until they could do curved surfaces like roman tiles.

      They can

And the aesthetics are a matter of opinion. I like them all, myself.

  • Muppets and investors looking to make their next billion, with nobody talking about being off-grid. As usual. There's not enough money in that. With Elon Musk, the 'saviour' in keeping the muppets on the grid in their electric cars. And who incidentally has most to benefit from centralised 'solar farms' selling you power.

A future with over-reliance on the grid when recent trends show grid electricity use has been going downhill and finally the masses have their chance to go off-grid for real. It's never been easier to go off-grid and that is precisely why over-reliance on the grid is being ushered in to obscure the simple fact that Average Joe can give them the middle finger now - and it will only get even easier in the future. But the tax-paying masses have been swindled by the State Solar Scams going on worldwide, where Nations and States pay a bomb for electricity - particularly in sunny areas. Or going off-grid is outlawed and severely curtailed by regulations put out by the Thieves.

And then there is those lovely daily 'network' charges being well over a dollar a day, or around 500 bucks a year) without even turning a switch on. Zero talk of that. While Solar Slaves get crumbs for generating their power to the thieving grid, which the taqxpayer pays for, incidentally. Wow, I'd love to be in on that scam: keeping a fossilised centralised power-generating grid business relevant in the age of cheap renewables, finally giving the masses a chance to give the middle finger to the Thieves.

Batteries at home will just save them even more money, while you remain on-grid (where they want you) while you severely reduce their investment expenditure by catering to peak loads for them….all-the-while paying the world's highest prices for electricity. Oh but it's great: you are doing good for the environment. In particular, their environment.

Show me the solar tiles, Musk. Show me how efficient they are. And how they are connected. And how costs compare to regular ones. And show me how it makes it easier to go OFF-GRID, not stay on the thieving grid. Ah, you won't do that, will you? No because you're part of the problem. Yes, problem.

Stop spewing the global-warming lie in order to sell your tosh & to add some sense of urgency & 'social responsibility' to your business. Puhleeeez, we have heard all that crap a million times. We are damaging the planet in numerous ways and carbon dioxide has very little to do with it. Global warming is the latest global agenda to wrestle more control over our lives and for the long-suffering taxpayer to foot the bill for the latest political crimes.

  • I'm going to make a prediction. These tiles falls by the wayside with 'bigger' Tesla products.

Anyone who has any mechanical ability knows that these tiles arent going to work as well as they think so.
