I subscribed when it was first announced and I don't think it has been worth it.

    • +1

      I agree.
I get no use/value out of the premium extras.

    • +4

I disagree. Has been worth it alone for remote sync when I travel.

sabnzbd+sickrage download my shows and sport. Then with the Plex app on my phone, I can select which ones to automatically transcode and sync when I'm on WiFi, so I can watch it on the go.
With the last few races of the Formula 1 season happening at 3am local time, it's usually downloaded to my phone before I get the train to work on Monday morning.

      • I was with you for your entire post, but F1? How the heck did you get Plex / SickRage to recognise that as a "TV show"? Can you just specify a path instead or something?

Heck I have enough trouble with real TV shows, due to stupid naming conventions from the 'scene' (Mythbusters, American Dad, few others are a mess)

        • +1

Sport in general was a pain. I ended up using a sabnzbd rss query to download the formula 1 episodes.
I then have a sabnzbd post-processing script that renames it to a plex friendly name (and delete duplicates and unwanted sessions)

It's not perfect, as it has to download all 720p files between a certain size (basic rss filter) before being able to post process it… But I'm using a $2/month VPS for this, so the download speed is quick, and I don't have to worry about download limits anyway.

So for this years 18th race at COTA, I end up this something like this, which work as you would expect in Plex:

          Formula 1 - S2016E180 - American GP: Other Media.mkv
          Formula 1 - S2016E181 - American GP: Practice 1 Session.mkv
          Formula 1 - S2016E182 - American GP: Practice 2 Session.mkv
          Formula 1 - S2016E183 - American GP: Practice 3 Session.mkv
          Formula 1 - S2016E184 - American GP: Pre-Qualifying Commentary.mkv
          Formula 1 - S2016E185 - American GP: Qualifying.mkv
          Formula 1 - S2016E186 - American GP: Post-Qualifying Analysis.mkv
          Formula 1 - S2016E187 - American GP: Pre Race Commentary.mkv
          Formula 1 - S2016E188 - American GP: Race Session.mkv
          Formula 1 - S2016E189 - American GP: Post-Race Analysis.mkv

Not all races have all 'episodes', but as long as I have the episodes ending in 5 and 8 I'm happy. There is sometimes multiple analysis episodes, so I preference 'Teds Notebook' over the standard BBC analysis.
Season and Episode numbers are a little large, but it's the easiest way to sort the media, and plex will keep everything in order for when you want to binge.

… ALL of this could have been avoided if they just allowed us to update the tvdb for 'sport' (EG: http://thetvdb.com/?tab=series&id=279437 )

        • @BluBoy:
I use a Custom Search function in my Usenet indexer to grab only 72P files and there are a tonne of exclusion words so I only end up with either Quali or the race depending on which custom search I have activated.
I get an email when the feed has a result and that allows me to pause or cancel it if required, not possible if I'm asleep of course but getting dupes due to different names is super rare.

        • @snuke:

How do you get plex to recognise the media?
I've tried something similar, but the files won't be recognised by plex unless you have 'SxxExx' type filename (unless you mark it as home videos, but then that causes other issues).

        • @BluBoy:

I use Emby with Kodi, so Emby will show an item if you want that does not follow the naming requiments. It goes into my Movies folder and shows as most recent. If required I would have to manually rename which can be done as Sab downloads, but you have a Sab script already to do this that sounds far better.
The standard Sab renaming options won't do it.

        • @BluBoy: Wow

I'm super impressed, that's an immense amount of work. I don't care about F1, but I recall when I followed WRC watching it was difficult to obtain, let alone import into anything.

I've reached this weird stage where I don't like watching things, not recognised by my library, which is totally retarded - but I have this old abandoned folder of TV stuff / documentaries / Kazaa / Emule style downloaded old interesting things which would be just impossible to import into Kodi or Plex - some of it interesting but I'll be damned if I can bring myself to double click on them in explorer.

I imagine the work you did there would be really appreciated by some F1 fans.
(and yeah the TVDB can be stubborn, as can the pirates so the whole thing is a mess, often)

        • @BluBoy:

Which VPS provider are you using? I have a $2 one also, but they have updated their terms and BitT is no longer allowed.

        • @GaelicAU:

          I went with a special from lowendbox.com
However, if I was doing it again, I'd find one with a better processor and try out the new (encrypted) ACD streaming capability in plex.

I also use usenet, so no need to worry about restrictive BT T&Cs

        • @BluBoy:

I was using usenet for a while but by the time factoring the price for the usenet account, plus the index account etc, I found more affordable to stick with the traditional BT route.

I am am Lifetime Plex Pass member. I did it not because of the extra features (as when I joined there were very few), but because Plex is a fantastic application and the developers deserved some money (for what is a free product).

If you use Plex at all, you should provide something back to the people who have worked so hard to create it.

      • +8

Not saying you do this but… Do you pay for the "content" that you use on your Plex setup so that you "provide something back to the people who have worked so hard to create it" ?

        • +2

I purchase 95% all of the Blu Rays that I convert to a digital format (as well as all of my old DVD collection. There may be a few which I have borrowed from a video store and 'time shifted', but that would be a small portion of my collection.

        • @changa:

Awesome, thanks for the reply, adds significant context. Kudos for supporting both the "content producers" and Plex developers +1

        • @changa:

What programs do you use to convert?, like most people I've got heaps of unwatched DVD/Blurays that I would prefer to use with Plex rather than change discs every few times during the series- before everyone says lazy I'm in crutches atm :P

        • @Polde:I use a variety of applications.

I use MakeMKV to convert Blu Rays and iVIPro. I like iVIPro as it searches the web and embeds the metadata for the file including cover art.

I have also use MacDVDRipper Pro as well.

Man……….. this targeted stuff by the plex guys is kind of lame

  • What are the benefits?

    • +2

I think if you train to work, you can have the app on your ipad and just say to the app 'ok queue up 3 episodes of this TV show, always new' or something, when you get home, despite you being offline, it marks the files as then watched, removes them, grabs the next three.

      (Something like that)

You can also, I think remotely view stuff, it will transcode and send over the internet, you'd need a good internet link (cable or NBN) and decent quota but you could, if bored, pull out your device(s?) and watch stuff remotely.

It's those features I like, over Kodi (XBMC) - I otherwise prefer XBMC
I also think Plex is ever so slightly more wife / girlfriend usable.

  • Am I missing something? I click on the deal and it still shows as $149 USD

    • I got that as well.

      • Same. Is it targeted or using a URL other than what's been posted?

  • I'm not getting any deal, is the URL not working?

  • No point. Free version via xbox one (and pc/mac servers) works fine for me.

  • Off topic question about Plex:
I dont know why my Plex steam seems to buffer even though my PC is the server.
At certain parts of the movies such as the action scenes, it becomes unwatchable.
I ran the same movies through Chromecast and it was high definition throughout.

    • probably trying to transcode?

    • Either bad wifi signal or not enough grunt in your PC I'd say.

Check your CPU passmark is at least 2000 for a 1080p stream. And while its stuttering check your PC's CPU/RAM usage to see if it's maxed out.

If in an apartment complex use a WiFi analyser and pick a frequency with less traffic.

Maybe do a test with watching plex on a different PC/laptop on your wifi network so Plex won't have to transcode, should work fine if your wifi is ok.

    • If it worked fine before an update, go and downgrade it.

I've had to stay on ver 0.9.1606, as it always buffered and audio wasn't in sync with video most of the time when I updated to latest version. This was for xbox360 app mind you, so could be different for various devices

      • Yeah I've heard similar things regarding various versions.

Also check the clients stream settings such as bandwidth (which may impact the need to transcode). I'm not near a Plex system now but there may be one or two stream settings that you can toggle on and off, and sometimes those have an impact too. Vague sly recall one being called direct stream or something.

Targeted AND I paid the $149 for lifetime when my yearly expired yesterday!
    Them feels.

    • I had been an annul subscriber until two weeks ago when I paid the $149, so I feel your pain.

  • Another benefit is early access to things like the tv download functionality they released a few months back. I'm still waiting for it to be properly released for all.

    • I was so excited for this feature but so disappointed once I set it up. I went and purchased a HDhomerun connect just for it.

First of all you must downgrade to a beta version (usually beta is newer than new).

Then you can only record and play, I was expecting to be able to watch live but it cannot, maybe it can with the HDhomerun extend, but I would thought if you had a decent server like I do it would transcode to watch. It does however have a trial feature to transcode the recorded program to save on disk space which is good.

Lastly the EPG seems to be limited to capital cities which is useless for me, so many channels missing.

    • As in, it will download stuff for you? That sounds like a foolish move, Kodi and Plex already 'pretty much….' cater to dodgy people, they don't need to openly admit it with a downloader, they're just asking to get targetted.

  • +1

Been a paid up member for over twelve months and didn't get this offer :(

  • I bought it but my account says under review.

  • Can anyone sign up?

I don't need it but I'd like to doneate some money to them coz their product is awesome.
