Internet in Thailand

Planning a trip to Chang mai next year with a view to living there either six to nine months of the year. What I need to Know and what I cannot work out is internet speed. What is needed to keep my husband happy is download speed ,here he downloads all sorts of stuff from movies to old Tv shows.and I play a few online games but mostly Roblox with my grandchildren on line. Can anyone tell me if the speed in Thailand compares to Australia and we have the before Malcolm NBN.Thanks in advance

Like all things Internet it's going to depend on where you are, how much congestion there is etc. In general the speeds in Thailand have been about the same as Australia (ADSL2+)

I just spent a few weeks with my uncle and aunt at their place in Chiang Mai and I can tell you the internet was better than it is here in Australia. You shouldn't have any problems :-)

Unsure about Chiang Mai but I lived in BKK for 2 years until last January. I can say my internet connection there was much faster than my ADSL here. A 1gb torrent would take about 15-20 mins. My ISP was True

australia has third world internet compared to asian countries.

well australia has third world internet compared to actual 3rd world countries

    • The tyranny of distance. (And a small population)

      • TYranny of distance- Tell me about it. NBN have just proudly announced that they are now available at my address … fixed wireless. I've been on ADSL2+ for years and live 1.3km from the exchange.

Year-on-year, Thailand has been one of the most improved in terms of internet connectivity. And as one would sense, they're doing better than us (Akamai report: https://www.akamai.com/uk/en/multimedia/documents/state-of-t…). Our 4g speeds are our only redeeming feature.

In a major hub such as Chiang Mai you should have no problems (e.g. a Chinag Mai Speedtest from 3 years ago, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQY2Ltrl25I).

Funny you should bring this up. I have just got my internet installed today. 899 baht for 50mbps download and 20 mbps upload from TRue. It is much faster than my internet in Australia. I have done a speed test and it returned 58.9mbps download and 22mbps upload the server is in Bangkok.

So I would assume you would not have any troubles with you net. I am not in Chang mai but I am a similar distance away from Bangkok.

OzBargaining from Thailand? Give that man a shirt!

  • Of course always on the look out.

I'm only here half the year though. Every two months

Agree with the comments on speed comparison with Aus.

One additional point is that it's good to have a VPN and in particular (if you want Aus TV through ABC iview) one that has an Aus gateway. If you don't have the VPN some news and video sites are blocked by the censor. It's not too pervasive but does block a lot of news sites.

Agree with the comments from the locals. Speed is good, stability is generally good, and price (compared to Oz)is fantastic.

None of this download quota nonsense.

If you are in Chiang Mai you will probably have a choice of ADSL, cable or fibre.

Also strongly suggest a vpn - I use VPN.ac, which includes a secure proxy, and has a Sydney based server.

  • Thank you all so much ,all good information that I can understand .
