Looking for a New Router or Modem Router

Running FTTN have a Netcomm Wireless NF10W looking for either a replacement modem router (Netgear Nighthawk D7000 / Asus DSL-AC68U) or their router equivalents (R7000 / RT-AC68U) for bridging or similar or higher.

Location near Katoomba NSW.

Anyone with any experience with extenders vs routers can also please contribute.

Was looking at an Netgear EX7000 but wasn't sure of its performance and compatibility / features vs the other options.

Cheers and thank you in advance.

  • What do you want to do? Are you experiencing poor wifi reach and want to boost the range? Or do you want to upgrade the VDSL modem part as well?

Standalone Wireless extenders (repeaters) are not worth your time, don't bother spending money on them unless you are absolutely out of other options (because there are much better options). This includes bridging another router and installing Powerline adapters into your home.

The Asus DSL-AC68U is probably one of the better VDSL router combo in it's given price bracket.

For powerline products, you can't go wrong with the TP-Link TL-PA8010P . However, it's kind of bulky.. not to mention a little expensive at $125 dollars.
Best to grab these during an ebay sale (got mine for $109 via futu_online)

    • I need it just for wireless products no Ethernet and yes mainly for range and better VDSL capabilities.

If I can improve my sync rate and then my home WiFi coverage and internet speeds then it is a win win win for me.

Looking at bridging my current Netcomm Wireless NF10W to something. Unless completely replacing my modem router will do me better sync rate and other signal stats wise.

I would love to powerline but all I have got is daisy chains and no open sockets in good locations at the modem router.

So it's bridge to a new router or buy a new modem router.

If someone can convince me that bridging with an inferior modem to a superior router will net be better or same gains as buying a completely new modem router equivalent then I will probably do it or that rather.

      Tossing between a NF17ACV / D7000 / R7000 / DSL-AC68U / RT-AC68U

Leaning towards the Asus's because of their superior compatibility/firmware and ui customisations or so I have been told.

      • I'm fairly uneducated with VDSL technology and not able to answer questions on whether or not a higher priced modem router will get you significant gains in sync speed.

But in case you are interested, this page lists all currently available VDSL modem / routers
        https://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/fttn_registered_modem_router

scroll down to the section called

        Working advanced modem/routers
(often models with better WiFi and faster routing chipsets)

you should see links to forum and discussion pages for each of the models. Good luck.

        • Cheers thanks yeah whirlpool is a great resource for this subject and category.

  • Don't have any experience with NBN so far but can definitely vouch for the DSL-AC68U. Using it right now and the Wi-Fi / QoS / performance has been absolutely great. The ASUS has been my first non Billion unit for the past 10 years. Another notable thing is firmware updates comes pretty regularly for it, adding ISP compatibility, performance improvements and bug fixes too.

    • I think I'll be just getting this modem router.

I have heard so many great things about it that even if it is 50-60 dollars over its router only cousin I think that it is worth the extra cost in weight.

    • I have DSL-AC68U but …. my experience has not been that great with it. The difficulty is in determining if its Internode or the router that consistently drops connections. The logs on it don't point to anything so without giving it to someone else to test out no way to determine what's at fault. (Internode show no connections, and uptime shows continous uptime but websites go down at times, at times take a long time to load, etc). In its defence it does have some great features. Unfortunately guest wifi is failing to work now (it used to.. not sure if its a firmware update introduced issue). It also seems to take a long time to load its web interface on chrome, or at times fails to load some components. Anyway… I wouldn't recommend it but then I won't be replacing it until it dies, going to stay with the annoying inconveniences.

      • An update: So it seems that UI in internet explorer is not much better. In fact today I've had over 5 minutes of waiting for some pages to load (e.g. click on LAN, and wait more than 5 minutes until it loads anything)

PS. The only reason I chose DSL-AC68U originally is its VPN features, otherwise I probably would have chosen something else.

        • Hey g1, i am with internode as well and never had problems with dropped connection.. i used firefox and edge and logging in to UI doesnt seem to pose any issues.. can PM you my setting if you want..? didnt use VPN and guest wifi but i tweak the QoS quite heavily..

        • @h1s0k4:
          Hey,
Thanks for the offer, it may be just WiFi congestion but I checked my local area and made sure that the router operated on fairly empty channels. It would be good to see another config so copy/paste of the text version would be good.

VPN features are great, especially due to openvpn support and thus ios and android support.
